Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

My kenmore dishwasher was installed 3wks ago. It had sat in the garage in its box for the last 3yrs. After being installed it worked perfectly. I had a problem shutting the door last wk. The handle would not latch and it just felt lose. Then it started latching again and I ran a load of dishes. At that time, I noticed that the detergent dispenser was not opened and so I ran it again and the same thing. Then I noticed the dishes were not even wet, so at that time I call someone out to check the water connection and it was fine and they checked the electrial hookup and everything seems ok. The indicator lights will come on and apparently the timer is working fine because after a certain time the light will appear clean. So, it is not activating the wash apparently. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to fixya.

I have a suspicion of what the issue could be, but first I'd like to verify the unit make and model number.
I understand it is a Kenmore, but there are many manufacturer's for sears/kenmore including Whirlpool, Frigidaire, LG, Bosch and more, so a model number will allow me to speak to your machine instead of generalizing.
I'll watch for your reply and hopefully I can help you move forward from there.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Thank you for the reply and providing the model number. This dishwasher is built by Frigidaire/Electrolux for sears, branded Kenmore.

The first thing I'd investigate is the float assembly, since you've stated there doesn't appear to be any water "I noticed the dishes were not even wet" nor does the dispenser open, "I noticed that the detergent dispenser was not opened and so I ran it again and the same thing".

To check the float you'll need to look to the left at the bottom of the tub inside the door. Make sure you can move it freely up & down and listen for a "click" which should indicate the switch is functioning.

Thank you for choosing FixYa and please let me know what you find out and we can go forward from there, if necessary. Good luck.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    Hello again,

You say the unit lights up but doesn't come on. This would indicate an error with the door latch assembly to me.

As you mentioned previously the door had been giving you some grief, that is where I'd focus your attention next.

**Be sure to turn off the power at the house breaker or unplug the unit before servicing...safety first**

You will need to open up the console to investigate the door switch/latch assembly. To do this..

    1) The outer door panel is mounted to the inner door panel by Phillips head screws.

    2) Removing the outer door panel will expose sharp edges on the inner door panel.

    3) Be sure to support outer door as screws are removed to prevent damage to outer panel and dishwasher.

    4) The outer door panel is disconnected.

You should now be able to examine the latch assembly with switches. It should look like this...

You may need an ohm meter to check the switches, just on X1 setting to check the contacts open & close as you push the micro-switch closed...it should "click" as you push the switch closed.

Make sure to check the wires to the switches as well. Just make sure everything is secure, including the switches being secure in the latch.

Regards, (sorry about the font change)

Tip

It worked perfectly for me! I bought my Kenmore Ultra Wash Quiet 3 dishwasher...

The blinking "clean light" is a common problem with some of the Kenmore and Whirlpool models dishwashers. The problem is usually attributed to water supply temperatures being too low when filling. Apparently, there are some issues with the temperature sensing circuits in some dishwashers that causes an error code to be generated if a certain water temperature is not achieved in a specified time interval (this time may differ between models). There is a reset sequence that you can try to clear the fault. Push the NORMAL WASH then HEATED DRY buttons in that sequence two to three times. The unit will enter diagnostics mode, but can be stopped by pressing the CANCEL button. This will clear any existing faults and should return the dishwasher to normal operation.

To keep the fault from returning, it is recommended that you run your hot water faucet in the kitchen until it runs hot BEFORE you start the dishwasher. This will heat the water in the supply line for the dishwasher (most dishwashers are fed from the kitchen sink supply line). The theory is that if you fill the dishwasher with hot water from the start of the wash cycle instead of the cool water that is normally in the lines (especially if you have a hot water tank located far away from the kitchen), this should satisfy the requirements of the temperature sensing circuits. If the fault reappears, there should be a tech sheet located inside the lower panel under the door that explains what the fault is. The flashing light will be a series of flashes, followed by a pause. If you indeed have a component problem, it will depend on the number of flashing lights in the sequence. Refer to the tech sheet to determine WHAT component is affected and how to troubleshoot.

Dishwasher does not start

I had this problem and solved it by merely switching the associated circuit breaker off and on again. Something of a "hard reboot." Annoying ... and ... if it happens repeatedly (tonight was the first time), someting I will pursue fixing while hte d/w is still under warrwentey (It was purchased/installed less than three months ago.)

Food residue and a thin film or coating is being left on dishes. Top and bottom shelf items are affected. Started happening 4 months ago after working perfectly fine for 4 years.

Hi,

The scum, film and white residue problems have started since the reduction of phosphates in dishwasher detergents.

Here is a tip that will help you to solve the problem of films, residue, and scum in your dishwasher.

Kenmore Elite: Model 66576962K601.

I had exact same issue. I've called Sears Maintenance. They had to change 2 pieces in UI: Timer KUDS02SRB10 and CONSOLE Assy. Cost 360$ pieces 130$ Job Charge 60$ taxes.
Now It works perfectly, but I bought 1100$ 3 years ago... Really expensive to keep it running.

Kenmore dishwasher 15762

On the inside of the dishwasher (on the bottom), there should be a little "float" device, which tells the dishwasher when it has put enough water into the tub. Sometimes, this float gets stuck in the "up" position, so the dishwasher never puts any water in, but continues to run anyway as if it did. Try pushing down on the float to unstick it, then start the cycle over and see if it puts any water in.
