My son tryed to install new DIMM in our computer. I am two states away and didn't see whether he had it in all the way or not but it sounds like he didn't. He turned on the computor and said the monitor shows an error message to check the pc cable which he did but it still doesn't work. The power comes on, the fan runs loud but they here no hard drive running. Are the memory sockets on a board that plugs into the motherboard and maybe got unplugged or not

Get him to remove and reinstall it sometimes the ram modules don't seat properly and give an error beep or don't let the computer boot .Also get him to check that it is the correct type and speed of ram for the computer he is installing it in .some mother boards are particular and need the exact type of ram .

I hope this helps

In the bios/cmos settings there is an option you must disable when up grading this usually is the reason for dells being so problematic the option is called hardware shadowing, or quick boot the setting remembers the components to quicken the boot prosess, also motherboards need the dimm to run at a speed that syncs with the cpu's speed and the chipsets speed the owners manuel lists the supported speeds (if there are 2 dimm's installed both will run at the speed the slowest dimm runs at)

Cant get printer to print

I know this is going to sound odd, but did you install a new cartridge? My son worked on his for a while after putting in a new cartridge and couldn't get it to print. His friend, who is very good with computers and all helped, and to no avail they couldn't get it to work.
The printer at that time was very new, so we didn't think that could the problem...they were missing something. As it was, they were so intent on installing and setting it all up, they put the cartridges in without removing the tape that is placed over the end of the cartridge after being manufactured. Once they realized and removed both tapes, everything worked out fine.
It could be something that simple...if you were in a hurry. And, yes, I know it sounds impossible, but I KNOW THAT THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED so it could happen again. Good luck.

How do you open the case to install RAM?

Instructional steps
  • RAM
  1. Determine what kind of RAM you need, and whether your computer has enough open slots to hold it. The new RAM should match the existing RAM's specifications and configuration.
  2. Shut down the computer and leave it plugged into the surge suppressor.
  3. install-ram-1.3-120x120.jpg Disconnect all peripheral devices, such as the monitor, from the computer.
  4. install-ram-1.4-120x120.jpg Remove the computer cover.
  5. Ground yourself to the computer with professional grounding equipment like an anti-static wristband or hold a metal part of the chassis.
  6. Remove any cards or internal components necessary to give yourself unobstructed access to RAM sockets.
  7. install-ram-1.7-120x120.jpg Pick up your SIMM (single in-line memory module) or DIMM (dual in-line memory module) by the ends without touching pins or chips.
  8. install-ram-1.8-120x120.jpg If adding a SIMM, find the notched end and turn the SIMM so that it is parallel to the existing RAM card(s). Insert the SIMM into the socket at a 30-degree angle. If adding a DIMM, insert the DIMM straight in so that it is perpendicular to the motherboard.
  9. Use slight pressure to keep a SIMM from backing out while rotating the module to an upright position perpendicular to the motherboard.
  10. Make sure the small holes on each side of a SIMM fit into holders
  11. install-ram-1.11-120x120.jpg Feel or hear retaining clips lock a SIMM into the socket; close the side clips on a DIMM.
  12. 1 Gently try to pull the module out to ensure it is locked in position.
  13. Replace all internal components.
  14. Leave the cover off and reconnect the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
  15. Turn on the computer.
  16. Check the amount of RAM by right-clicking the My Computer icon in Windows and choosing Properties. On a Mac, use the About this Macintosh command in the Apple menu.
  17. If you don't see the right amount of RAM, turn off the computer and try "reseating" the SIMM or DIMM (take it out and put is back in) and reboot. If that doesn't work, call a technician.
  18. Shut down the computer and disconnect the peripherals again.
  19. install-ram-1.19-120x120.jpg Replace the cover and reconnect all the peripherals.

We have activation key for computer. Son caused

Format the hard drive and re-install. Do not swap any letters enter exactly as it is shown.

If that fails and your son is a student you can buy Windows 7 from www.theulitimatesteal.co.uk which is Microsoft's student site

Having a problen installing 1gb ram. unit is 1gb ddr2 dimm 533mhz. computer turns on, shows that it has updated the memory, but does not boot

Hi,

if the computer states that the memory has been recognised. but fails to boot. it may not be compatable memory for your CPU/Processor. Or system bus. check your previous memory stick, to ensure it,s the same running speed 533mhz. Failing this if your computer does not support this.
check the manufacturers website, to see further details:- Maximum supported memory/Speed et,c.
Systems bios date, and whether an update is available. your only other alternative is to install 2 x 512mb sticks of Ram.

I tried to intall new RAM in a new Gateway DX4200-09. The computer came iwth 2 x 2 gig sticks of 667/800 dual channel 240 DIMM DDR2. I tried to add 2 more sticks of GEIL Black Dragon dual channel 800 DDR2...

From what you've described, it sounds like you've got a bad DIMM slot, since it's not recognizing RAM that you know is good (because it works in the other DIMM slots).

Since it's the DIMM slot, which is part of the motherboard, your safest bet is to let Gateway repair it under warranty.

It's a bummer to go without a computer for two weeks, but at least you won't have to pay to fix it.
