Question about Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer

Open Question

My Brother MFC-9440CN is printing orange instead of red. I have replaced the magenta cartridge and the drum assembly (I suspect it would have been due for a change anyway) with no success. The old magenta cartridge was leaking toner causing a streak down the side of the paper - the new one fixes that but both cartridges print orange instead red. I am guessing the the toner leak from the old cartridge may be affecting the laser mirrors but have not been able to find any information on a DIY way to clean the mirrors. Do I need to take it in for service?

The problem is solved. I eventually replaced the black toner cartridge even though it was printing black fine and for some reason the problem went away. I don't know if that was coincidence or not, but the problem is gone.

Have you tried cleaning the corona wire?  You can also use a cotton swab and clean the drum.  Just be sure to unplug the unit from the wall and allow everything to cool down.

Brother Genuine Cartirdges????
ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Epson Cartridges. !!!!!!!!
That sounds like your problem.

In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc. These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.

I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......

I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. .

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Thanks and Good Luck :0)

If you want to reset your Brother MFC 9440N machine so you no longer have the error message: Toner End of Life, do the following:

1. Open the front cover of the 7820N, that is, the cover that allows you to pull out the toner and drum, but don't pull out the drum/toner.
2. Push the button: Options (located on the left of the control pad).
3. Type: *00 on the keypad.

The Brother MFC 9440N should be reset and the Toner End of Life message should disappear. Warning, this may void your warranty and ultimately damage your machine if you are reusing or refilling your cartridges, but you should already know that. Hope this helps.

I have a Brother MFC-9440CN. It has been sitting for a while and when I print the right side of the paper has a lot of specks. How do I clean the inside of the maching.

In the users manual, it has directions on how to run a cleaning sheet. Do this 5 times. If it does not correct the error, open the machine, remove the cartridges and inspect the carts and the drum unit for excessive toner. If one of the carts is leaking, replace it and run the clean procedure. If the carts are clean, the drum unit needs to be CAREFULLY blown off with deionized compressed air set to 35 psi.

How do I set Brother 9440 MFC to print using black cartridge only?

You can set the MFC-9440CN to print with the black toner cartridge only through the printer drivers.

If you are using Mac, this needs to be changed before you print or set a preset.

If you are using windows, follow the below steps.

1. Go to Start menu \ Control Panel \ Printers (devices and printers for windows 7)
2. Right click on the MFC-9440CN and select "printing preferences"
3. Under the "basic" tab, you will see "color mode"; simply select "mono"

Thank you,

That is referred to as a repeating defect...most likely caused by a defect on the magenta drum unit. Here is a link for information on how to repair this problem:
