Most likely the graphics chip has overheated and the solder has melted and lost it's joints on the motherboard. you can either reflow the bga (this doesn't always fix it, or undoes itself if not done properly, or replace the graphics chip, or change the motherboard. here are some useful videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhxOVh2sbl8

Classic symptom of the nvidia graphics chip failing. Why it failed to shut down I'm not sure of.
What has happened I think, is that the laptop, while running, has built up enough heat to fry the graphics chip ( of caused the solder to loosen). The cpu will withstand the heat, especially as it gets cooling directly.

You can try and strip it to clean out the fan and heatsink of debris and dust, however, in this case I suspect the damage has been done and you will need to get the chip "reballed". Costs about 60.00 on Ebay.

Why does 2000 s40 volvo turbo runs hot and the fan stays on after shut off

fans are designed to run on after you shut engine down as engine temperature rise after switching off . running hot could be caused by the top hose having gone soft when you rev the engine the water pump sucks the hose flat stopping the coolant flow or the radiator is blocked and need flushing out

NEW HP Spectre 13T-3000, 13.3" Touch will not run with the battery and shuts down randomly

you can use the unit without the battery. Remove the battery, plug in the charger/power supply and turn on the unit and wait for the result. if the problem persist?..... maybe the fault is in CPU fan. check the fan...overheating the processor. Cleaning the heat sync and reapplying silicon compound on CPU's can cure the problem.

Sir My friend has purchesed a Compaq laptop 10-11 month before. Now he is getting problem with this. When he starts his laptop is ok. But after 2-5 minutes or some time after booting,it automatically...

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

My hp pavilion dv1000 fan turns on for a little bit then turns back off.Do I need to replace the fan?

Hi,

Are you having any problems with the laptop overheating or shutting down unexpectedly?

Generally the fan should only run as much as it needs to in order to maintain an optimal temperature. the fan will be turning off as the laptop will be cool enough. if however, the laptop is very hot to touch you may have a faulty sensor telling the fan the laptop is cool when it isnt. this generally leads to the laptop crashing or shutting down though if thats not happening i recommend contacting HP for guidance.

it is most lekely functioning properly if you arent having any other adverse effects

Thanks

My durabook seems to get very hot to touch. I hear the fan running. Is there more than one fan..or is that even the problem?

They tend to get hot, its not a problem unless it starts to cause problems such as random crashes or shut downs, If its an old notebook then try using a can of compressed air to get rid of some dust. Either way what surface are you using it on? because id only use it on a flat hard surface like a table if not already and use something to raise the back of it by an inch or two more then what the rubber feet already do. Most people will assume laptops will run fine on your lap or bed etc how ever this is not the case, this will cause more heat and premature problems. I've made something for mine so i can use it on my lap when im in bed, its a piece of flat thin plywood around 22inchW/15inchL for my 17' lappy with halve inch rubber door stops glued in place where my laptops rubber feet would go, this reduced my overall heat from hot to touch to barely warm in fact i think the heat im feeling now is from where my hands have rested on the laptop :) laptops will run hot strait from the box if not well ventilated.

Laptop switched off while i was working on it

After the notebook shuts down do not turn it back on for 15 minutes and then test it again. Will the notebook work longer if you let it cool down for a while? Isn’t it hot if you touch the bottom? Can you hear the fan running?
Most likely you experience a laptop overheating problem and it would be fixed by cleaning the cooling module – the heat sink and the fan. The notebook processor produces a lot of heat when the notebook is turned on. The cooling module helps to keep the CPU cool when the laptop is working. The cooling module includes two parts: the heat sink and the cooling fan. The heat sink is attached to the CPU and helps to conduct the heat from the processor to the radiator. The cooling fan blows on the radiator and helps to disperse the heat produced by the CPU. The laptop will overheat if the heat sink radiator is clogged with lint and dust or if the cooling fan stopped spinning.
If your laptop shuts down after some time without any reason and warning, check if the cooling fan spins. Usually it makes some noise and you can hear it. If the fan works fine, then check if the heatsink is clogged. In some cases you can clean the heat sink with compressed air, just blow inside the fan openings on the laptop bottom. If the heatsink is completely clogged, then it is necessary to remove the heatsink for cleaning.

Hope This Helps!!!  Please Don't Forget to Rate my Response!!! Thanks!!!  uva
