Question about Sony VAIO Notebook
Could be several things, you don't mention this as occuring recently, as in "just happened" or whether things started with an intermittent boot and it got worse over time.
The 1st thing to do, is to eliminate the obvious, try connecting the laptop to an external monitor, if it boots to a good picture, the fault lies below:
If however, you get no screen on an external monitor and the laptop appears to be powering up and you have pressed the FN and number buttons to swap from laptop to external, then the problem is likely to be with your motherboard graphics. At this point I'd be inclined to have a professional repairer look at it

1. first try it under a bright light and see if you see a dim image, if so it's your inverter or lcd backlight,
2. try pulling the charger out of the laptop, removing the battery, holding the power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute in order to drain it, then replace just the charger (not the battery) and try switching it on. this usually fixes basic issues.
3. if no luck, the next thing i would try is the memory (ram) chips under the laptop, remove the small squarish flap with a philips head screwdriver (usually will find two chips - sometimes 1) and remove one of the ram chips, try to start it, no luck, remove the other chip, put the first chip in it's place (remember to put it in at a 35-45 degree angle, make sure it's in properly - AND THEN push it down- or you'll ruin the connectors), mix and match the chips, and if you have other matching ones available, try those.
4. remove any pcmcia cards, usb sticks, internal wireless lan card, dvd drive, hard drive, then switch it on, see if it works, if so, put each item back in one at a time, shutting down and restarting with every successful result, until you get to the one causing the error. 5. it could be a video card issue where the solder joints have left the motherboard or just plain burned up, this is often beyond economical repair - some guys still fix it though.
let me know your results - and be sure to rate if you found my advice sincere, peace, abz
