This problem occurs when the "spider" gasket inside the multiport valve fails. This repair can be done by a homeowner but requires a few things. 2 c-clamps, the new spider gasket, and chlorine safe adhesive/caulk to seat the gasket.

I dont know what model multi-port valve you have as there are 3 model that fit on this filter. Here is the link to haywards manual site where you can find a manual on your filter, and your valve that will list instructions and part numbers.

Hope this helps

Backwashing A Sand Filter with A Push/Pull Slide Valve or Multiport Valve

Lots of people are first time pool owners and pool professionals forget to teach these "newbies" about the simplest aspects of pool ownership.

One of the biggest questions we receive from new homeowners is "How do I go about backwashing my sand filter exactly?"

It doesn't matter if you have a Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, Sta-Rite or any other number of Sand Filters on the market they all utilize the same basic valves for backwashing; a push/pull slide valve or a multiport valve.

To backwash with a multiport valve:
1) Shut off pump motor.
2) Press down on valve handle, rotate valve from FILTER to BACKWASH position.
3) Roll out any backwash hose or open any waste line valves.
4) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
5) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
6) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
7) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to RINSE position. Run on rinse for 15 - 25 seconds.
8) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to FILTER position.
9) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
10) Roll up backwash hose so the dogs use it as a chew toy.

To Backwash a sand filter with a slide valve:
1) Shut off pump motor, roll out backwash hose.
2) Twist to unlock plunger T-handle, push or pull(depending on manufaturer) the plunger 2" - 3".
3) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
4) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
5) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
6) Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position.
7) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
8) Roll up backwash hose.

What i she sequence when backwashing---Backwash - Rinse - Wash ? I have a Vari Flo

Backwash until water in the sight glass is clear, shut off the pump and change the valve setting to rinse, turn the pump on for a couple seconds and then back off, change the valve setting to filter and return to normal operation. NEVER move the valve handle while the pump is on.

How do you backwash Pentair FNS 48

If you have a piston BW valve shut the pump off twist the handle and pull up till you can lock in the full up position then turn pump back on. Water will run clear then cloudy, run till it turns clear again.
If it is a dial valve, always shut pump off before moving valve. Then push down on handle and turn 180 degrees then follow directons from above.
Some DE filters won't have BW valves and you will just need to break down the filter and clean by hand. You can follow directions in your manuel for this.

After I vacuum the pool, backwash it and then turn the filter system back on it blows in a lot of green water back into the pool. What should I do?

1st Green water is algee. Kill the algee in the pool. 2nd when you're finished backwashing the filter. Stop pump and move valve handle to rinse position. Then restart pump. Run in rinse mode until glass is clear. Then stop pump again, and move lever to filter position. When you're backwashing, you're reversing the flow of the water through the filter. When you switch directly back to filter, anything left loose in the filter flows back to the pool. When you select rinse, it reverses the flow back to normal, but keeps the water going to the waste outlet until clear, that way that green puff of water will go out the drain. How do i drain my pool with a hayward variflow pump?

To Flush out the filter with the backwash setting. The backwash setting releases trapped particles from the filter back into the swimming pool. You may need to alternate between the rinse and backwash settings until the water runs clear in order to unblock your filtration system and flush out clogs. To Rinse away dislodged items from the backwash setting. The rinse setting flushes clean water through the pipes and carries away any particles or clogs freed during the backwashing. To Drain the pool select waste on the multiport valve. This sends the water directly to the drain rather than back into the swimming pool. Close the filtration equipment and stop the pump with the closed setting. You should only use the closed setting when you turn the pump off. This function allows you to remove the strainer basket, clean the filter tank and perform other swimming pool maintenance on the filtration system.

Water still flowing out waste when filter is in filter mode.

The gasket inside the valce is either out of place or damaged. You can rebuild the valve with a gasket set. For a quote on the repair kit, send your valve model number using our contact form at www.arrowpools.net and we can identify the correct kit for you.

To back wash my filter

The drain is the black cap that is on the side on the tank near the bottom. To backwash this type of filter you do not need to drain it. Turn off pump, move multiport valve handle to backwash, run pump for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, turn off pump, move valve to rinse, run pump for 10 seconds, turn off pump, move handle back to filter. You may need to repeat depending on how dirty the filter is...
