Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro Celeron running XP pro. When I updated with service pack 2 and 3 the screen boundaries shifted about an inch to the left leaving a dark bar down the RH side of the screen, and the desktop is now displaced to the left so that an inch of it is off the screen although it can be dragged back central again, when the RH side disappears into the dark area. Is this a known problem and what might the fix be please? Many thanks. Roger Middleton.

Thanks autosoundins. Eventually went on to the Toshiba Europe website. Coudn't find my model number (it's old!) but joining the owners club enabled me to input the serial number which identified the model. From there I downloaded the display drivers which resolved the problem.

Can I change my operating system from vista to xp? If I do that what will be its advantage and disadvantage?

Yes you can as long as you have the installation disc with a valid product key. The disadvantage is an older operating system. The advantage is XP is more stable when installed and updated to Service Pack 3.

You may need to check to see which "service pack" you are currently on.

See below requirements:

System Software — Windows XP & Vista
  • Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition
    • 32-bit OS Installation Only
  • Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
    • With Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3

  • Not Supported:
    • Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)
    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, 3.1, DOS

  • Not Tested:
    • Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition
    • Although Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, there are currently no known issues with Vista Home and Home Premium 32-bit operating systems and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 compared to the supported Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition operating systems.

Windows Vista SP1
There are currently no known issues with Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista based on our initial limited testing and customer feedback. Although full qualification with all Digidesign products has not been completed, we do not recommend against updating to SP1, given the number of important overall system fixes in SP1. We do recommend that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP1, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.

Hmmm. Are you absolutely certain that you have the latest updates or service packs applied to your machine. Something in my mind reminds me of an update Microsoft issued to correctly identify and use these large capacity drives correctly.
