Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I Have a GE appliance refer (5 years old) and I hear a noise every time the fan cycles. It has done this for 2 years. I have not noticed any issues with cooling or the ice maker. Is this normal for this product?

GE side by side freezer, rhythmic whirring noise coming from freezer, at the top near ice maker.

Typically the freezer fan motor should be replaced, the issue usually lies with the tachometer within the fan motor, the main control board is not sensing the proper speed of the fan motor and therefore can't operate it correctly. In many cases the main board gets replaced too to ensure the most up to date software, as GE has had NUMEROUS software revisions on those main boards over the last 11 years. You would need to capture the complete model number from the appliance it's self in order to see if your main board has had preceding part numbers. Pleazer Appliance...

Woke up this morning and the refrigerator was running, but not cooling. I can hear the fan running, but the temp of the freezer continued going up to room temperature. It's only three years old, so I...

We have a GE side by side that was only 4 years old before it starting giving us problems. The warranty period was only one year on all parts, including the compressor. Through our research we learned that profile appliances have or did have a better warranty. I believe it is 5 years on all or certain components. Either way it may be worth contacting GE customer service to help you with the issue and determine if repairs and parts for your appliance are still covered under warranty. They were very helpful in our case and ultimately discounted the parts I ordered and replaced myself. Replaced the the temperature sensors on the freezer side, the defroster thermostat and defroster heater before finally breaking down and replacing the control board. The control board (appears to be a common issue with GE) was the problem. It was very easy to replace. While working through the issue, we would defrost the coils located on the inside of the freezer side with a hair dryer. It would get us by until the parts came in or they frosted over again and prevented air from circulating over them, thus causing the freezer not to cool. Good luck. Hope this helps you.

My ge washer wssh300g1ww does not spin out clothes well

Hello, I too bought one of these washers(WSSH300G1WW). After about one year of operation i noticed that the low spin cycle was making noise so look at it and it was just making noise and not spinning. canceled the cycle restarted the machine but this time set the spin speed to high instead of low, it works on high. im guessing its the clutch in the machine that is faulty and really cant affoard to fix at this time. The thing is i liked to use low spin cause the thing would shake violently on high even with a small load. So now when it spins or i start the machine i make sure theres nothing close that its shaking will cause to fall and break. I also bought the matching dryer (dsxh47eg1ww) it too has problems, the bearings that hold the front of the drum up are going out, thing is i dont over load it and it seems that they went out or started to go out very early as my clothes were getting caught inbetween the drum and the dryer 2 months after i bought it. Im 42 years old so i remember when we had REAL washer and dryers. When quality was revered by companies and consumers. Those old machines ran for years (maybe even decades) without problems, replace a belt from time to time. Now days your lucky to get five years out of an appliance. I know these ones arent going to see 5 years. their about 2 years old and im ready to go find some 1970 model year washer and dryer, rebuild, give a custom paint job to call them retro.

GE Eterna stopped cooling. Not even 2 years old!

The noise if you listen close is probably the klixon cycling because the compressor is hot. If the condenser is plugged (real dirty), sign of a clean house, and/or the condenser fan is bad you will not get cooling. If the condenser fans operating properly and the fans inside the freezer and refrigerator are operating that would indicate serious problems assuming the compressor is operating.

Good Luck,

Red glow (from defrost heater?) at bottom of rear panel in freezer

This is from the GE Appliance "Knowledge Database" Web site:

Refrigerator - Explanation Of Red Glow

In a no frost refrigerator, the defrost timer activates defrost heaters in the evaporator section (rear of freezer) which heat up and melt the frost off the evaporator coils. This process lasts for approximately 25-45 minutes and usually happens up to twice a day.

During this time, there will be no running sounds, no fan noise, and you may hear water dripping or sizzling as it hits the heaters. On side by side models, you may even be able to see an orange glow at the bottom of the freezer.

This is normal.

GE GSL25JFR Freezer fan noise.

You are correct in believing the fan is going to be a problem. The evaporator fans inside the freezer compartment are common at going bad. I believe it is due to the extreme temperature and moisture conditions inside the application. The noise is the stator or bearing equivalent going out, the speed should remain constant. It may eventually make a screeching noise upon start up, or just lock up completely. The good news is replacements are relatively cheap and easy to find. If you do replace it yourself, make sure the fan blades are blowing in the right direction. If possible, remove the old one and bring it with you to the local appliance parts supplier and he should be able to help you get the right one, it will probably be a kit of some sort with multiple mounting brackets, screws, and maybe even a couple of blades. don't let this intimidate you. Most of this you will not use.
