Question about Yahoo Mail

1 Answer

Someone has hacked into my address book and sent letters to all my contacts saying that I was mugged in England and need money. I have changed my password but I have noticed that my contact list is missing as well. How can I retrieve it? Is there anything else I need to do to my account?

First thing is to reset the password next try contacting yahoo customer service about your problem to get info about strange IP address behavior Even ask about the backup of contacts, may be they can help you on this.
Most important thing with yahoo accounts is its very easy to hack it by trying forgot password questions. ( To see what I am saying try forgot password on your id and you will be able to see how simple it is get access to your account by answering 3 secret questions which you had set when creating the yahoo account and even many of your friends might know the answers) So reset your forgot password questions with more tougher ones to crack.
I had the same problem earlier and I had reset my yahoo password several times, but my roommate was able to access my mails without my notice. Then realized that he is accessing my account through forgot password as the questions to retrieve forgot password are the same old ones with questions like what is your birthplace which he already knows very well.
Hope this helps and be safe online as it is very easy to access your financial details and credit card details when your email is hacked.

My address book has been hacked and spam emails sent to all my contacts. how do i stop this

Change your email password, making sure that you use uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers a symbols to make the password harder to guess / hack.

This will stop anyone that has access to your email using your old password.

Someone is sending my yahoo email addresses of my friends emails like they are being sent by me. How can I stop this?

The happens to a lot of people. Your email has been hacked. The only solution is to save your address book, close the hacked email account, open a new one and let everyone in your address book that you have been hacked and to ignore further emails from the old address.
Sorry for the bad news.

People from my address book have been receiving messages sent from my email address but I am not the one sending them! These messages do not register in my sent box. Has someone got hold of my account...

It could be possible as more and more people are complaining about hacks these times. To avoid any security trouble you should change your password and maybe your additionnal e-mail address (if you have an other one) password.
Try to find something difficult to find with numbers/letters and without any link to your personnal life/informations.
If after that your address book still receive email from your address but not you you should think about changing all your passwords/email addresses or to contact yahoo support.

I have had emails sent from my address (not from me). It was suggested tht the only way to prevent this is to change my email address. I don't know how to do that. Any help is appreciated as the emails...

Most email providers like gmail, hotmail etc won't let you change your email address other then making a new account. Reading your question your email account has been hacked.. Best thing to do is change your password to keep them out.. Make sure you use a strong password ...
Use upper/lower case letters and numbers ... Example: SolUtiOnsTodAY20120 ... That would be very hard for hacks to get in with that password

It appears someone has hacked into my yahoo email acct, my friends are sending messages that my yahoo email address is sending them malware & making it look like I am sending them something to open. ...

This has become a common problem in the past couple of months. Please follow the steps below in order:

1. Log on to your Yahoo mail account. Check in the "Sent" folder. If you see the bogus messages in question in that folder, then it can be assumed that someone has hacked your password and is using your account to send spam. You would then need to go to Step 3 (skip 2).

2. If you do NOT see the bogus messages in your "Sent" folder, then your Yahoo account has likely not been hacked, but rather someone else's computer (which does not use Yahoo) is infected with a malware bot that is sending out the messages independently of Yahoo, but spoofing your address as the sender. It gets the addresses to send to from that computer's contacts/address book. If this is the case, then you can't do much but advise your friends of the facts and that you're not responsible for the messages. Then go to Step 3.

3. In either of the above instances, it would be a good idea to first terminate your present Yahoo account, and open a new one with a different e-mail address. Choose a completely new, and hard to guess, password and new "secret questions." Advise your friends and contacts of your new address.

The problem that arises in these instances is that the user doesn't want to have to change their e-mail address, as that causes some inconvenience and is time-consuming. They would rather just change their password and secret questions and leave it at that. IF your situation is as in Step 1 (your account was hacked), then this MAY be sufficient. However, whomever hacked it knows your address and basically who you are, and had access to your address book. Your security is compromised any way you look at it.

The safest and most reliable method is to change your address, and your password/secret questions...and to advise your friends to please make sure their computers are clean of malware.

I strongly suggest using SpyBot Search & Destroy v1.6.2 from Safer Networking for malware protection. It is highly regarded, free, and not too difficult to use.

Hope this is helpful.

I received three suspicious return emails this morning that say an email was unable to be sent to numerous contacts in my address book. These are contacts that I HAVE NOT sent ANY type of email or messages...

First check your Sent Message folder, if you find any sent item that you haven't sent, then there must be something going on with your account, perhaps it's been hacked or with similar unauthorized access. If you find any suspicious activities, simply change the password and wait for another hours to make sure you don't receive another failed delivery message.

You also need to check your mail options such as your signature, in most cases, hacker/s changes the contents of the signature and the sender's name, etc..etc.. Probably they have inserted some texts in place of your signature. If you find so, delete them and save the new settings.

Let me know if you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

......in order to protect yourself.....change your yahoo email password first........then contact yahoo support and notify them of your problem.........

It sounds like your information might have be hacked.....and in that case......you need to have a good anti-virus/spyware software .......I would suggest downloading AVG......

Some one has stolen my email and sent out a message to everyone in my addressbook that I was in London and was robbed and needing a large amount of money what can I do?

Do you have access to your account right now? If you do, immediately change your password. Then email everyone on your address book and say your account was hacked and the last message was a hoax.

If you cant get into your account, Try using the "Forgot my password" feature to get a new password. If that doesn't work contact yahoo customer care. No matter what, get in touch with your friends as soon as possible to tell them the message was fake.
