Question about Refrigerators

GE TFX25PRYA Refridgerator We have had continual problems with the coils in the ice maker forming rust or corrosion. I have to use a scotchbrite pad to clean it periodically but I'm concerned about our ice having contamination.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will try it.

Going to try the CLR suggestion from another but this is very helpful as well. I do not have a water softner and I do have a GE SmartWater filter for the icemaker. Will check Servall website. Thanks

I received two excellent suggestions and find this service to be very worthwhile. I will certainly use it again if I need help on something.

Use a product called "CRL" which means Calcium-RUST--Lime..it's available at most large dept. stores and for sure at hardware stores..works like a charm.. thoroughly wash the parts cleaned with soapy water after wards..

Rust in general is Iron Oxide Particles, very similar, but less refined, to the iron supplements people take. The worry is other metals that may have been used to coat the coils. some times if they have been dipped in another metal, and if the rust is flaking this metal apart from underneath then that can be dangerous to your health.
In general if the rust is simply surface rust and not huge flakes of rust then your ice is ok, Cleaning it the way you do will help it work more efficiently also because rust inhibits the cold. Dont use any metal cleaners or chemicals because these are highly hazardous to your health.
I hope this answers your question

Make sure you remove all traces of CLR As it is highly caustic and you would not want this to contaminate the Ice.

It sounds like you may be using a Water softening system using Salt. You may need a filter which removes impurities and high acids from the water. A whole house system will protect other water lines and appliances from problems created by this.

You may be able to get a line filter for just the refrigerator and perhaps Stainless steel coils for the Icemaker and start fresh again with new coils.

I recommend contacting a Servall outlet. They have been in business since 1929 and have a Dot. Com site on the internet. They are Nationwide and may be in your local phonebook. If you do not get anywhere with Servall, contact GE Customer Service about this corrosion issue. You are correct to be concerned about the rust.

Refridgerator side is set to 34 but temp reads 52 last night freezer was at 20 when set to 0 cleaned coil of dust now reads 0 but fridge side still wont come down it is a GE side by side

your evaporator coil in the freezer behind the rear panel is iced up and cold air cant flow thru ice, defrost the evaporator coil, then check continuity of the heater element under the coil,if its good, then suspect the defrost control, usually located in the refrige side on the upper area

GE refrigerator, ice melts in ice bin

Since your refrig is cooling , I would replace the # 4 AND # 5 thermistors . The # 4 thermistor , tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp , when to cycle off , associated with the fan speed also .

GE Monogram refrigerator icemaker problem

This is normal if you have previously used the crushed ice mode. The refrigerator will continue to dispense crushed ice for some time until the reserves are depleted. If this continues for a longer period then shut down the refrigerator and remove the dispenser compartment, clean any remaining ice and reinstall it. Start the power supply and wait 5 hours for the ice to form. Use the cube mode and you will surely obtain ice cubes.

The freezer coils load up with ice and stop air flow to the refridgerator and freezer

Likely Defrost heater built into coils. Secondly defrost thermostat mounted at top of coils or computer board in rear that controls defrost cycle. Check heater and thermostat continuity first after unplugging unit.

Exactly the same.

The hose that carries the water from the top coil to the evaporator pan is plugged with ice. You need to leave your unit unplugged for a long time so the ice in the drain hose can melt. If you restart it too soon the problem will not be solved.

Ice cubes are formed but they do not dispense. Seems like the arm is not spinning the coil.

It is possible that your ice maker has a problem with the thermostat located inside the ice maker itself is defective. The thermostat tells the defrost elements under the ice maker to come on for a few moments and the process of dropping the ice is begins and then completed. When bad it never begins the 6 steps needed to make Ice. Let me know if I can help you, Sea Breeze

GE Monogram refrigerator/freezer problem/ice dam in ice maker

I have had the same problem with ice forming. I found the problem is from the ice maker. The water fill tube delivers water to a plastic piece that acts like a funnel. The water goes through this plastic piece into the ice maker. Ice forms in the plastic funnel piece causing the water to overflow into the ice bin and freezer.
