Question about Refrigerators
Use a product called "CRL" which means Calcium-RUST--Lime..it's available at most large dept. stores and for sure at hardware stores..works like a charm.. thoroughly wash the parts cleaned with soapy water after wards..

Rust in general is Iron Oxide Particles, very similar, but less refined, to the iron supplements people take. The worry is other metals that may have been used to coat the coils. some times if they have been dipped in another metal, and if the rust is flaking this metal apart from underneath then that can be dangerous to your health.
In general if the rust is simply surface rust and not huge flakes of rust then your ice is ok, Cleaning it the way you do will help it work more efficiently also because rust inhibits the cold. Dont use any metal cleaners or chemicals because these are highly hazardous to your health.
I hope this answers your question

It sounds like you may be using a Water softening system using Salt. You may need a filter which removes impurities and high acids from the water. A whole house system will protect other water lines and appliances from problems created by this.
You may be able to get a line filter for just the refrigerator and perhaps Stainless steel coils for the Icemaker and start fresh again with new coils.
I recommend contacting a Servall outlet. They have been in business since 1929 and have a Dot. Com site on the internet. They are Nationwide and may be in your local phonebook. If you do not get anywhere with Servall, contact GE Customer Service about this corrosion issue. You are correct to be concerned about the rust.
