Question about Compaq Presario CQ60-204NR Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60-420US and about 60% of the screen is now white with colored vertical lines. Compaq tells me I can send it in for hardware repair for $370 which of course would be stupid since I can almost buy a new one for that. Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this problem for a reasonable amount of $?

Sounds like you have a bad screen...if you are comfortable taking things apart, you can probably replace pretty easily for less money.

I did a quick search on ebay for Compaq CQ60-204NR screen and there were a bunch, prices varied, but were around $100

Basically a laptop screen only has one connector that is pretty easy to connect....the tricky part is getting to it...you need to remove the bezel and trim to be able to get the screen out of the laptop and then to put the new one in.

Take out battery from laptop and disconnect power cable. Keep the power button pressed for 30 seconds and then plug the power cable. This will remove static charge from laptop and should resolve the display issue,

My Compaq presario CQ42 has a white-red thin line at the right corner of the screen. Is it a problem to use the laptop with it before I fix it.

@tharindupedu

If you see a Vertical/Horizontal colored lines on your LCD, that means either the Video Card, LCD, or the LCD Flex cable (this is the cable that connects your motherboard to your LCD screen) are going bad and needs replacement. You can still use your laptop though but I strongly recommend having it fixed ASAP before it gets worse. You're still under warranty, call HP/Compaq at 1-800-652-6672.

Good luck.

My screen has a vertical line red-yellow-green from (top to bottom) that stays there. How to fix it?

I do not know any setting that makes a vertical line red-yellow-green from (top to bottom)

If you can find a monitor to connect to and know how to tell the PC to send a signal to it (ie, on a Dell it is Function F8) you can determine if it is your Video card or your screen that has failed. The Video card is part of the Motherboard and very challenging to replace. The LCD screen however is not as expensive and relitively easy to replace. You can watch YouTube videos on how to. A screen can be found at sites like Amazon and EBay.

Black screen with vertical lines through it

Could be faulty graphics chip or faulty screen. If you can hook up external monitor and picture is fine then probably faulty screen. If external monitor shows same problem the faulty graphics chip. Take to repair shop and let them have a look.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?
This would ensure that it's the screen and not the video card..
If you do that and you receive a good picture then it could be something as simple as a loose video cable. Or it could also mean something like a bad video card or the expensive one, a bad screen.

Two vertical lines on my compaq presario (M2000)

Hello,

Try changing your screen desktop resolution to a different value. If you still have verticle lines, then try changing the color depth from 32bit to 24 or 16. If the problem remains your display adapter has completely failed. It has failed to compute column row addressing math.

Naturally, you would want to find and install the latest drivers for your display adapter with the hope that the failure is in the software driving the display adapter and not an onboard chip. If updating your drivers fails to resolve the issue you need to have service performed on your laptop. Most laptops have the display adapter soldered on the main circuit board and many shops are capable of replacing this chip set.

Yet, get a quote first as the cost might cause you to consider an upgrade into a laptop that has a display adapter that is Direct X 9c or Direct X 10 ready as that will run most of the new game titles coming out this year.

Let me know if you have any further need of assistance as you run through the above troubleshooting routine.

I do hope this has fixed ya!

Two vertical lines on my compaq presario (M2000) laptop

Well, since the line disappear when the screen saver comes on, I"m led to believe that all the hardware side of the equation is OK. To put it simply, if there was a malfunction in the video (chances are) it would affect that too.

I would update (most likely available as nobody usually does this) the firmware for your video card. So identify the card EXACTLY, from documentation, or from the build list on the manuf. website, goto the manufacturer, say, ATI, and find the firmware there, where you will also find instructions to install it.

Then, just to be sure, I would update the video driver for Windows, in a similar manner to the instructions above.

If, despite all the above you still have a problem, then its time to get the computer serviced.

Good luck,

Erik.
