Usb card reader is not connected but shows as connected

Every time I reboot my Dell PC the card reader shows up as drives j k l and m (4 slots) but the reader is NOT connected. What do I do to stop this "ghost" card reader?

This started a week ago and I don't recall adding or removing any software or hardware.

  • father_moe Aug 06, 2008

The problem is that when I see it as drives I disconnect it on the usb icon. I stop and remove the ghost. However, when I reboot ( and this happened 3 times), though there is nothing connected to the USB port, it shows up as drives. How can I stop the "ghost" of drives from reappearing?

Where can you use a sd card on a dell inspiron 530

The 530 doesn't have a built in port for the card but you could find one at www.surpluscomputers.com that will read multiple types of cards. Have you tried plugging a USB cable from the camera to the computer and downloaded the info that way?

WHERE DO I INSERT A MEMORY CARD ON THE PC

9 in1 media card reader was an option on Dell Demension 3100. If you have this reader installed, it would be in the slot right above the front head phone jack with 4 thin slot opening to insert different type of memory cards. If you don't have this you need to by a external usb reader - as low as $1.00 from ebay for basic SD card reader.

How to format corrupt memory card?

You will need a card reader (unless your PC has an SD/MCC slot): 1- Insert the SD into slot or into the card reader and then insert the card reader into a USB port. (please wait for few seconds) 2- Click on Start - RIGHT click on MY COMPUTER -Choose Manage 3- Look at the left information pane and click on STORAGE 4- You should see all your drives on there to include the SD drive 5- Right click on SD drive (it should show you the path ie E:\, D:\ etc and the size 1-2-4-32 GB etc...) 6- Choose FORMAT (There will be a drop down menu, please choose NTFS) and wait for it to do it's thing (this is irreversible) Wait till you see the words HEALTHY PARTITION (followed by the drive name) You are done! Have a great day!

How to install a sd card reader on a Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop? no 4 pin usb on motherboard?

I managed to install a card reader on my Dell Dimension 8200.

The main problem is that the Dell motherboard does not have the correct USB pin. This is a 9-pin MoBo USB header.

The quick answer is I installed a USB card with an internal port.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unbranded-USB-2-0-PCI-Card/dp/B00066LPA2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264968643&sr=1-6

Secondly I reverse mounted a powered 4-port USB hub in the spare 3.5" bay.

Third, I purchased 2 USB 5 pin male to usb leads...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/v2-0-Male-Motherboard-Header-Connector/dp/B000QC7NKM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

You cannot buy a USB card with 2 internals and do away with the 4 port powered USB hub because the card reader does need to be connected to a powered USB port.

I dont know how to use my sandisk to transfer from my cell phone to computer. which chip goes into the comp. usb port. the adapter or the transflash?

Some pc's have card reader slots which allow you to simply take the card out of one device and insert it into the card reader slot on the pc.
After this is done, the memory card becomes accessible.

My cell phone has a Micro SDHC card slot but my pc does not. In order to access the M-SDHC card from my pc I have to insert the card into the USB adapter that was provided with the Micro-SDHC card when I purchased it.

After the card has been inserted into the USB adapter, I then plug the USB adapter into an open USB slot on my pc which gives me access to the files on the Micro-SDHC card.

I want to download my pictures from my sanyo 770 digial to my p.c

2 Options:

1. Your camera probably came with a USB cable. If so you need to connect that cable from your camera to your PC and turn on the camera. Your computer should automatically recognize that you've plugged it in and should run a "wizard" that will walk you through importing those photos.

2. Your PC may have a "multi-card reader" this is a series of slots that accept different sizes/types of memory cards from cameras etc. Your camera has a memory card that you can remove and place into one of these slots. Again once you've plugged in this memory card you should again get the wizard asking you'd like to do.
