Question about Dell Latitude D505 Notebook
Hey all. I've had my Dell Latitude D505 for the past 4 years and have had no problems. Recently, I switched from Windows to Ubuntu, and in 7.10 Gutsy I had no problems. However, having changed to 8.04 Hardy, I've had a long colored vertical line appear on my screen systematically for nearly 3 months. In the beginning it was just one, but now I'm upto about 15. They don't really obscure the screen, but they are quite annoying and it is getting harder and harder to work on.
I no longer run Windows, but I have an extra copy and will consider completely reinstalling if possible; I can backup the hardrive, no worries.
Please don't suggest hardware replacements, I'm only in the 11th grade and my dad would freak if he knew he had to replace the LCD. Oh, and I live in Africa, so...it would be difficult. I don't mind taking off the screen and replacing it if you can show me a way to do it.
The lines are cause by dead pixel sensors. There are hundreds of pixel sensors at the edges of the screen, when one of these sensors fails, then the result is a line. The line can vary in color, but they all have the same cause. I know you don't want to hear this, but you are going to have to replace the lcd in order to fix the problem, but hey, 4 years is a good run time without any major issues. Here's a link for instructions on changing the screen. It's for a D610, but the D505 is basically the same machine.
