I have the exact same problem, except I have a newer version of Mac OS X.

I get the same error comment despite using the device manger or pressing on the scan button. I've checked the HP folder for anything relating to the scanner and no matter what i've clicked on or have tried, it did'nt resolve the problem. I have uninstalled and have reinstalled the software which did'nt resolve the problem. I have a MacG5 and a G4, both of which are running OS 10.4.11.
I gave up on it today and bought a used 4315 off of Ebay. We'll see what happens.

I'm running a Mac 10.5.4. Go to your Applications folder and find the Hewlett-Packard folder. Drag the HP Device Manager to your dock. Select the device manager and scan from there.

Hp deskjet 5100 wia driver

I don't know why your scanner is not working
This printer is supported by Windows 7. Therefore, if you are using Windows 7, you might try rolling back the driver, or updating it, or uninstalling it and letting it re-install next time you connect it/reboot the computer. All these things are done from the hardware device manager > printers in the OS
As WIA is contained within Windows, rather than an additional driver from HP, the steps above should resolve any issues that are due to a corrupt driver.
If you are using a Mac read this
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/Officejet-5100-won-t-scan-to-Mac/td-p/1967991
This may not be why the scanner is not working though.

HOW DO YOU SCAN

Hello pjbenven!

To use the scan features, your device and computer must be connected and turned
on. The printer software must also be installed and running on your computer prior to
scanning. To verify that the printer software is running on a computer running
Windows, look for the device icon in the system tray at the lower-right side of the
screen, near the clock. To verify this on a computer using the Mac OS, open the HP
Device Manager, and click Scan Picture. If a scanner is available, it will launch the HP
ScanPro application. If it is not available, a message appears to let you know that a
scanner was not found.

To send a scan to a program on a computer from the device control panel (direct
connect)
1.
Load the original on the scanner glass. For more information, see Load originals.
2. Press the left arrow or the right arrow to select the Scan function, and then
press OK.
3. Press right arrow to select the program that you want to use (such as the HP
photo and imaging software), and then press OK.
4. Press Start.

HP Scanjet 4470c compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.1

You will not find drivers for this old scanner. Sorry but this scanner is not compatible with Tiger, Leopard, or Snow Leopard, and HP offers no drivers other than for OSx 8.0 & 9.0 which are 10 years old. Time to purchase a new scanner.

No. A new scanner assy will cost as much as a new machine. You need the scanner for faxing and copying.. The machine will not work without a scanner assy, it is the light bar that moves across the page.

The HP CD and web download were created before Mac OS X v10.5 development and release so there may be problems with the install process. They are yet to release new package to suit check here for details and updates

Also check this info on mac 10.5 with this printer.
