Question about Black & Decker Classic Metal APP F63D Iron

Open Question

Iron won't heat up.

My Black and Decker Classic Metal iron is about two and half years old. The cord has become badly twisted due to wear, so the connection isn't being made, and the iron won't heat up. Otherwise the iron is in fine shape, and since it was fairly expensive, I'd like to repair it. I think all it needs is a new cord. Is this a possibility, and will it be very expensive to replace?

SOURCE: the black and decker iron wont heat up

It probably has a high temp overload opened up inside or the thermostat control has gone bad.You can only tell for sure by taking the unit apart and testing the circuit for continuity. The steam feature on the iron is heated by the same element that heats the iron so it wont work.the element itself could also be bad,but I have never seen one go bad.You will have to check each component seperately to find the damaged part.or you can test the whole circuit at the plugs end,and use a jumper across each part until you have continuity through the unit.Make sure the thermostat is turned all the way up.the part that you are bypassing when you get continuity is the bad part.
You can buy a cheap continuity checker at any lowes,or even wallmart for that matter.

Cheaper irons may steam better using distilled water. Minerals in water can cause this due to build up inside.

If the iron is still in warranty send it back via the shop where you bought it, the inner wire is frayed and needs replacement, if you know an electrician its as simple as shortening the flex by a few inches and reattaching it again. the inner wires twist with time and become frayed or come loose from connection

There is a security screw in the back of the F63D classic iron. It must be removed to get the back plate off. I haven't found the right tool yet myself, though it was suggested it is a "security" Torx.
