The problem is your lid switch. This is a common problem with this model washer, and a very simple & inexpensive problem to fix. Click on the following link for advice on how to replace:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

You can find a replacment switch at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Cabinet Parts" heading on the next page. I believe thats the heading the part is listed under. Sears has excellent part locator drawings to assist you in identifying the part. Once you have the part number identified, you can do some comparative shopping at other online websites too. Use the part number that Sears provides, however. A new switch usually runs about $25 to $35. In addition, make sure you check the lid strike. This is a small plastic piece on the lid that is used to activate the lid switch through a small slot. If the lid strike is broken off, it will give the same symptoms of a defective lid switch. I hope this information helps you. Please post back if you have any questions.

PS You do not have to drain the wash tub in order to complete this repair. Once the lid switch is repaired, the tub will drain. You can also by-pass the lid switch as a temporary "fix" until your part arrives. I would not recommend using the washer in this fashion, long term, because the tub will not stop spinning or agitating when the lid is opened. This is a safety feature of the washer. To bypass:

    1. First of all, UNPLUG the washer!

    2. Disconnect the lid switch connector as described in the link provided.

    3. Remove the lid switch assembly from under the washer casing as described in the link. There are two mounting screws along the lid opening and one ground wire holding it in place.

    4. With the lid switch assembly removed, cut the connector plug off leaving about 2 to 3 inches of wire.

    5. Cut the green (ground) wire off the connector (not needed) and splice the two black wires back together using wire lugs or a crimped splice.

    6. You have now created a jumper plug. Plug this jumper back into the lid switch connector on the timer, and your lid switch is now by-passed.

Again, do not use the washer long term in this fashion, and do not run the washer with the exterior case removed.

Kenmore 90 Series fills with water but would not agitate or spin

You have a problem with the motor coupling. Top-load washers use what's called a direct-drive system, meaning it does not use a belt but what's called a "motor coupling". I probably replace 5 a week because these little guys break because of 2 reasons that i've found.
1) The break mechanism is too dry and causing the basket to stop at a holt, which puts a lot of strain on the coupler.

2) They break because of over-loading. I don't think you're over-loading though because it was find for 5 straight years.

Good luck to you. The repair is kind of hard to do on your own for the first time, so I would call an authorized technician. It will run you anywhere between $90 to $120 at most.

Best of luck!

We just purchased a top load Kenmore 800 washer machine. We have washed 2 loads of clothes and Now it has stopped filling up with water. It will not do it to wash or to rinse. We have gone thru the mannual...

The first thing seems to be the timer,or the water level switch. Try filling the washer with water by hand, if it starts to agitate after being filled its the timer, if not it is the water level switch, let me know if you need further assistance.

Ge top loader washer agitator does not work

To check the agitator. Start the washer into wash cycle. Once started Push down on top of agitator. If it catches some times or all of the time when pushing down, then then doggets are worn, under the agitator. You`ll have to remove the agitator to see these. If by pushing down on the agitator, nothing changes, Then you probably have a transmition problem. Check this and let me know what you find.

Kenmore wash machine will not spin

Eight years is getting kind of old. When the clutch or transmission goes out, it costs more to replace the part than to buy a new washing machine. You'd better plan a shopping trip rather than spring for that $100.

Kenmore 80 series washer

Your transmission is not engaging thats why the speed changes your making will sometimes get it to work.Honestly any machine after the 10 year age mark is not worth the cost of replacing the transmission.
