I cannot receive or a fax message to or from my HP 5610 PrinterFax. Just get a busy signal. The telephone line is OK

I have tried disconnecting everything overnight - no change! I also get the words busy signal appear in the window when I try to scan from my printer fax. A friend sugested a power surge might be responsible

please read my previous comment - tried that!

    thanks

Try to reset or turn off the machine for 10 minutes and again turn on
there must be some setting changed in it

But can you receive a fax from that line also?

    Try this:

Remove the LIU and check for bent pins or contamination in the LIU and in the product. Additional information on removing the LIU is available from the HP Web site.

If any bent pins and/or contamination is present, do the following: Clean the contamination and straighten any slightly bent pins (for severely bent, or broken pins, order a replacement LIU: click the document link above for information on ordering a replacement.)

Reseat the LIU back into the HP fax product, being careful to seat it squarely and completely.

Verify that the phone cord is plugged into the proper line port.
Test the sending and receiving fax functions again.
If a fax can be sent and received, the fax is working properly. If the fax is being used on a dedicated fax line no additional steps are needed.

If a fax cannot be sent or received and this product was working on this same phone line with the same setup before this problem occurred, the LIU might need replacing (especially if there have recently been electrical storms in the area). Refer to the User Replaceable Parts document for your product for assistance.

    Good luck........

Yes, you must set up your fax machines like this: The receiving fax must be set to auto receive and the telephone line must be inserted in the "line" input. A line must then be connected from the "Tel" to the "Line" of the Transmitting machine, which must be set to "manual receive." This is not really a satisfactory way of doing things as you can't send and receive 2 machines on the same line together. A much better way is to have 2 lines. with a machine attached to each. Get the tel company to put "No answer transfer" on the line as an accesory. Give them the number of the fax machine that transmits. Make it "manual receive" Now you have a versatile system that you can also use the office telephone with.

How do i set up fax to automaticely receive faxes after several rings

For a phone line dedicated only to the fax machine, the process is as follows:
  1. Press Menu/Set, 0, 1.
  2. You will see the Fax Receive window
  3. Use UP and DOWN arrows to change the setting to FAX ONLY
  4. Press Menu/Set.
  5. Press STOP/EXIT
Your fax machine will now answer every incoming call.
If the fax machine is sharing the phone line with a telephone, repeat the above steps and change from FAX ONLY to FAX/TEL This option will allow you to share the line with a phone only, not an answering machine. Once in FAX/TEL mode, the fax machine will still grab every incoming FAX call, and give a special ring (slightly different than a regular telephone ring) when it's a regular incoming phone call signaling you to answer the phone. I hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck!

We can send faxes but we can not receive faxes. The fax machine that sends the fax tell it that our line is busy. Is that a machine problem or a phone line problem?

Problem lies in your Receive Mode setting. If you don't have a dedicated phone line for the fax machine, you need to set it up for either Manual where you answer every call or Fax/Tel whereby the Fax machine determines if the incoming call is a fax or phone call. Instructions per Intellifax 4100 Manual.

Select a Receive Mode
Choose the mode that best suits your needs by pressing the Mode button
repeatedly until the FAX and FAX/TEL lights show the setting you want to use.
Manual
You must answer every call yourself.
The Brother machine must be started manually
to receive faxes.
Fax
For use with a dedicated fax line.
Every call is answered as a fax.
Fax/Tel
For receiving fax and voice calls on one line.
The FAX answers every call and receives a fax or
double rings for you to pick up a voice call.
TAD
For use with an answering device.
The TAD answers every call and stores voice messages.
Fax messages are printed.

Receiving and sending faxes

if the fax is connected to the same line and you have a phone connected to the fax you need to make sure you connect the line from the socket at wall to the correct socket on the fax you can check this by looking at the point the line is connected on fax there should be two connectors one says line and one says tel.. the line in goes to the line socket and your telephone goes into the tel socket.. if you have them the other way round it cant connect properly..on the front display panel make sure you have it set to the auto setting or tel fax mode for receive.. if you have it to auto it will check the incoming call if it is a fax it will send it through if not it will ring till you answer.. if set to tel/fax mode when it rings you will have to answer the phone and manually press start if you hear it is a fax.. Good luck A

Invalid number

Fax machines do not work well or at all on digital lines. They are designed for analog lines, like the standard phone company line. You may have to install a dedicated fax line from your tel. company.
