I have tried disconnecting everything overnight - no change! I also get the words busy signal appear in the window when I try to scan from my printer fax. A friend sugested a power surge might be responsible

Try to reset or turn off the machine for 10 minutes and again turn on
there must be some setting changed in it

But can you receive a fax from that line also?

    Try this:

Remove the LIU and check for bent pins or contamination in the LIU and in the product. Additional information on removing the LIU is available from the HP Web site.

If any bent pins and/or contamination is present, do the following: Clean the contamination and straighten any slightly bent pins (for severely bent, or broken pins, order a replacement LIU: click the document link above for information on ordering a replacement.)

Reseat the LIU back into the HP fax product, being careful to seat it squarely and completely.

Verify that the phone cord is plugged into the proper line port.
Test the sending and receiving fax functions again.
If a fax can be sent and received, the fax is working properly. If the fax is being used on a dedicated fax line no additional steps are needed.

If a fax cannot be sent or received and this product was working on this same phone line with the same setup before this problem occurred, the LIU might need replacing (especially if there have recently been electrical storms in the area). Refer to the User Replaceable Parts document for your product for assistance.

    Good luck........

Why do I get a busy siganl every time i send fax

Plug a normal phone into the Tel port on the wall as it may be a line fault.Check that you have the telephone line cable plugged into the correct port on the m/c (needs to be in the line port not tel port.I have had an instance where we had to unplug the machine from the power point for 20 minutes to reset the fax module.

Cannot send fax but can receive fax.

You do not give enough information. What happens when you try to receive? Does it ring? Is there any message displayed?

You will have to look through the options in the unit to find the receive settings in the menu. Make sure it's actually set up to receive. Usually there are receive (RX) options such as: manual, fax/tel, fax only, number of rings, distinctive ring and others.

In most cases if the machine is set to manual, you will have to press a button to receive a fax. It may be just the "hook" button, or a start button. Check your owners manual to see which button. In Fax/Tel mode the machine will assume you are using a telephone on the same line. You will have to set the unit to answer after the phone rings a specific number of times(four, for example). After four rings, if you have not picked up the receiver the machine will take the like and receive a fax. If you set it to Fax Only you can set it to answer on any number of rings, but it's best to just set it to one. In this mode the machine assumes it has a dedicated line.

If you have distinctive rings for various people in your home or business then you will have to consult your manual to see how to deal with the different rings.

One last note. Make sure your phone line is plugged into the correct port on the machine. I get a ton of calls at work from people who have the phone line plugged into the extension port, and the phone plugged into the line port.

If none of this helps, you will need someone to look at your fax machine. If you call HP, have your credit card ready.....

Fax won't go through. Says the Line is busy/no signal? I have all the plugs in the correct spot. Do I have reset something?

If you press the Hook button you should hear a line tone and if you dont please check you have the volume at max. Also check to see if the cord is on the LINE socket and not the TEL socket, the cord could be of another make and not all cord are the same.

Connecting problems

Is it set to auto receive, is the tel line plug into socket marked line not tel. Is it used on a dedicated line, no extensions, if using ADSL you must have filter on line. If plugging standard phone in place of fax is dial tone heard and line is noise free, can you ring and speak fine on line using a phone. Is machine set to correct dial format for your country ie pulse or tone. When did it stop, have you had storms, phone work done, has it worked on this line before? I take it it copys ok is that correct.

My bet is A noisy phone line or B set to manual answer. More info equels better help, but I am short of free time now..

Invalid number

Fax machines do not work well or at all on digital lines. They are designed for analog lines, like the standard phone company line. You may have to install a dedicated fax line from your tel. company.

Not receiving faxes

So if you have no noise, its a prob of the tele company not of the mfc!
Or did the tel company change to another tel standard instead of your former type?
You have to talk to the tel company to get that clear. Ask for the line standard bein g used (ISDN, normal, or a special tcpIp).

When you got the info call brother hotline of your country for support. They will help you with that prob.
