By rule ballasts are not made for a dimmer switch ,if you read on the dimmer instructions it probably says so,the ballast can handle what it says it can handle on the ballast. Usually if you do get them to work on a dimmer it will give a significant hum that will drive you nuts and shortens the life of it as well

Hi,

Since this dimmer is a 3-way, it can control more than one light. Assuming there is one ballast in each light, I'd say Yes.
One thing you should know is that if you have more than 2 switches in the circuit, only the 2 end switches are 3-way, the ones between should be 4-way.
I've also heard that dimmers do not last very long on 3-way circuits, however it's built to be a 3-way, so it should work fine.

Hope this helps, if it does, please place a vote for me.

Thanks,
Handie Andie

Require schematicwiring ofma400 and high power 2 lutron dimmer

You can access Lutron's Wiring Library here:

I couldn't find an MA-400 or High Power 2 dimmer, so you might want to double check the model numbers and look for a match in the link above.

Lutron 1000w skylark s-103p. The lights hooked up to this dimmer had always worked. now sometimes when i hit the on buttom they don't come on at all. the dimmer is probably5 years old. What do you...

Older dimmer switches use rheostats to adjust the resistant loads on the switch. Since this is a mechanical operation, over time they become loose or corroded. So it sounds like this has happened to your dimmer switch and you should replace it with a more modern switch that isn't as mechanical.

I will really like a diagram of you product. Im having some troubles using it. Its about your Lutron FD-12-IV Rotary fluorescent Dimmer for Use with Magnetic Ballasts.

Since the product is as old as it is, I can't find instruction sheets for it on-line anymore. Your best bet is to call the manufacturer directly. They're at 1-800-523-9466 - its available 24/7 and can help you out than an online forum like this ever could.

I need a wiring diagram for a Lutron FD-12 fluorescent dimmer

I looked, it doesn't look like the documentation of this product is supported on-line anywhere. Frankly, I don't know if it ever was.

I would call Lutron's tech support center at 1-800-523-9466, available 24/7. They should be able to e-mail you something.

My 4ft fluorescent fixture has whiye and black wires that have been connected, hot and nuetral but it also has a red (brown) wire ? where does this go.

They make dimmable ballasts.
The Lutron dimming ballast shows an orange wire, not a brown >> but other manufacturers might call for different color.
I am guessing here, but ballast should work with Black Hot and White Neutral

I want you to answer back and say if the ballast works with just white and black, Thank you.

Need to hook this up to a lutron eco-t528-277-2 ballast which only has a hot, dimmed hot and neutral

If I understand correctly, you have Leviton florescent dimmer

And you want to connect dimmer to Lutron ECO-series ballast

This is the ballast with 3 wires: Hot dimmed, Neutral and Hot
02b5a79.jpg

Is this your dimmer???? Has Black, White, Red, Yellow-red, & Orange

3103a3a.jpg

Here's how to do it:
Dimmer yellow-red is not used except for 3-way switch >> cap it off with wire nut
Dimmer orange wire connects to ballast Dimmed Hot
Dimmer red wire connects to ballast Hot
Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral

Those are your wires going to ballast. As you can see, you need 3 wires going to florescent fixture

Next, let's focus on Dimmer:
Dimmer green wire goes to bare ground wire
Dimmer black wire connects to Hot from breaker box (we'll test for that next)
Finally the Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral as discussed above BUT is also has to connect to Neutral from breaker box

This means the Dimmer white wire is connected to 2 wires >> one wire goes to florescent fixture and the other wire comes from breaker box

So which wires come from breaker box??
It should be a black and white wire.
Let's test to find Hot and Neutral that come from breaker box.

Mark your wires.
Disconnect all the wires and separate from each other
Turn on power
Use ordinary tester
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands stay away from electricity
Power is on
Test each wire to bare copper wire
When tester lights up, that is Hot from breaker box ... this wire connects to Dimmer black wire
Now, test the hot wire to each of the other wires
When tester lights up, that is Neutral wire ... this wire connects to Dimmer white wire, and also connects to Ballast neutral.

Connect one wire at a time, and it will work.

Fluorescent dimmir

The dimmer you purchase needs to be compatable with the ballasts of the C.F. light. A compact flourescent potlight has a ballast, if your replacing incandescent bulbs with compact flourecent lamps
you still need a flourescent dimmer. Remember a ballast is like a transformer! If you compact flourecent fixture has a ballast by Lutron. then you need a lutron dimmer as there ballasts are not officially compatable with other dimmers, allthough I've seen them work. My advise is buy Pass & Seymour (Legrand) or Leviton.

Have a Lutron Skylark SF-10P need to wire to existing 3 wires

You have to have a special ballast on the light to dim fluorescent light fixtures. You also have to have a special dimmer.

How many dimmers types?

Certain dimmers can control standard incandescent lamps that use 120 volts while other dimmers can control low voltage xenon or halogen light sources that use 12 or 24 volts.
