Check oil level has auto shut off if low.

    Not the engine problem. Its the shutoff system on the compressor.

I'm not familiar with that model air compressor, I'm assuming this is a rotary screw driven by a gas or Diesel engine? If the inlet valve is open & the air compressor is attempting to compress air while the engine is starting up, it can be too large of a load for the engine to continue running. I would be checking to make sure I followed all the steps of the mfg start up procedure. If you had a reciprocating air compressor driven by an electric motor and the check valve or unloader valve fails and there is air pressure coming backwards thru the piping against the valves, the actual compressor itself becomes too hard for the electric motor to turn over. The amp draw is so large it causes the breaker to trip. In your case you probably don't have any back pressure coming from other machines making it hard to start but if the inlet valve on the air end is open it could have the same effect. If there is zero pressure in the machine and you start the engine. Everything is going to rotate. The inlet valve for the compressor has to be shut somehow to prevent the compressor from compressing air. If it's open, air will be drawn into the air end, the more the engine runs the more the air end will compress the air. As the internal pressure rises, the air end becomes harder and harder to turn which causes the engine to strain. That's a complete shot in the dark. There are many ways air compressors are controlled. There are many types of air compressors. It could be a problem with the engine itself. The bottom line is that you need to be able to know the air compressor is unloaded and not trying to compress air. If it is unloaded the engine should start up and run.

Ingersoll Rand 3 hp air compressor builds correct pressuse but trips rest when called to restart. Changed starter and running capasitors but no change in problem.


You need to check the head unloader.
Compressed air that is trapped over the piston when the compressor shuts off will be evacuated to atmosphere through the unloader valve, to prevent that compressed air pressure from adding load to the start up of the compressor motor, when the pressure switch again calls for air. For example, the last time you did a sit-up, you may have folded your arms over your chest, or if you are particularly masochistic : - ) , even held a weight to your chest. What you were doing is increasing the load against which your muscles have to work to effect the sit up.
Compressed air, captured in the cylinder after the compressor shuts off, would increase the load against which the electric motor would have to work. It may increase the load too much, and the motor may fail to start, or it may pull too many amps and fry a fuse or pop a breaker in the panel.
When the compressor shuts off, the unloader valve operates, it unloads the trapped air to atmosphere, and that problem is solved.
The unloader valve is plumbed somewhere in the line between the compressor and the compressor tank.
It is often part of the pressure switch assembly. It will, in many cases, be opened by the pressure switch, when the air in the compressor air tank reaches the set point and the pressure switch trips the power supply to the motor off, and at the same time, trips the unloader valve to open.

Compressor won't restart when pressure gets low. How do I fix it?


The unloader is designed to release the pressure in the discharge tube after the unit reaches set pressure. The unloader is usually located within the pressure switch and is enabled with a small lever opening a valve (some look like tire stem). You can verify if it is working by cycling compressor and listening for release of air after unit reaches set pressure. Some compressors do not have a built-in unloader relying instead on loose fitting parts to bleed out air. On these units, air leaking back from the intank checkvalve will cause problem of loaded/backpressure and the motor cannot overcome. Easy to verify if checkvalve is leaking; with pressure in tank remove the discharge tube at the checkvalve and spray soapy water. Clean or replace this valve as needed. Good luck

try to decrease regulator, maybe you ask to much power and it shuts of. specially with cold motor its important to ask less pressure.

the pilot valve or control valve when it unloads sends a air signal to close the motor throttle down to idle and depending on what form of control it uses for the compressor it will either use head unloaders to hold open the inlet valves or a unloader that dumps the compressor output to atmosphere, this one uses a silencer mounted near the pilot valve. if it uses this type remove the silencer and retest the operation. either you have a motor that is out of adjustment or the compressor is not unloading!

hi yor problem seems to be that your machine is running too high a pressure,try adjusting your unloader valve so that your pressure is no more than 120psi , if that fails then check and replace your non return valve
