Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a computer about 5 years old and while I was running Windows XP the screen would randomly turn completely white, sometimes with light orange lines running down it. I would try pressing ctrl+alt+del twice to restart the computer but with no effect. I decided to install linux and see if that fixed the problem, but it didn't. All of the drivers are up to date, all of the connections are connected, I've replaced the monitor but it still occurs. Since installing Linux, I have installed an FTP server to test if the computer still has internet connection and responds to an incoming request. So when the screen turned white, I checked the attached devices of my router and its not listed there, so it apparently loses internet connection as well. Needless to say the FTP connection failed. To sum it up, the screen turns white at random times, and doesn't respond to anything except turning the cpu off by holding down the power button. All drivers are up to date. What is the culprit causing this problem?

A few more things. I have replaced the hdd and that didn't help. I also noticed the keyboard lights for num lock, caps lock, etc, do not light up when I press the corresponding keys. Is the motherboard possibly the problem?

The streaks of color in addition to the computer componenets locking up points to an issue with the motherboard. You have ruled out the problem being with your monitor, and if your drivers are up to date and function correctly /before/ the error occurs, then it is not a problem with the driver (almost definitely). The only other thing it could be is a problem with the video card or the communication between the video card and mobo. With the addition of your LAN, mouse, and keyboard not responding, that would point to either two components and your USB (or PS2) ports becoming faulty at the same time (unlikely), or that your motherboard is unable to properly communicate with the devices. I would see what kind of tests you can run on your motherboard and, if possible, contact the manufacturer for more details and about a possible replacement.

Hi holm_fischer,

White screen often caused by a defective screen. The easiest way to determine if you have a hardware or software problem is by performing a power drain. Please follow the steps below for additional instructions.

Power Drain:
1. Turn off the computer.

2. Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet and take out the battery from the system.

3. Now, press the power button for about 15-20 seconds.

4. Put back the battery in and plug the AC adapter.

5. Turn on the system and try observing it.
--> If power drain did not work, you need to consult a repairman to have your screen be checked for possible damage.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

That is most likely the wrong video card for that motherboard. Or the video card slot on that motherboard is faulty... I would recommend taking it back to the shop and letting them fix it, since this happened after you got it back from the shop...

Beeping when I turn on me computer

The POST (power on self test) is failing which is why the pc is beeping. As stated by knotbeerdan, I would need to know how many beeps. Most of the time it's either something laying on the keyboard pushing doewn on the jeys, the keyboard is unplugged, or it could be completely different. I would say the reason it's restarting itself is the power supply is going bad. Typically that's the issue when they restart, though at times it could be something else causing it.

My acer aspire4310 notebook suddenly displays a white screen

If you have blue strip running down vertically from top to bottom then normally there is a problem with LCD or a loose LCD cable. But what I recommend you to test more is tha,t if you tab at the back of your screen ...does this problem occur ???
Incase it does, then its a loose LCD cable problem. You still need
a qualified person who knows how to open the monitor to repair inside.
And again for the White screen it can also be both cases I mentioned above
