You have to do one of two things:

Depending on the kind of laptop it is, you can hit a key to enter a boot menu which will allow you to choose what device to boot from (to format your laptop and reinstall Windows, you will want to boot from your Windows DVD)

Try tapping F9 or F12 over and over right after you power on the machine to see if it gives you the boot menu.

If not, you need to enter your motherboard's BIOS setup (the key to hit is different for different motherboards, but it should tell you which.....if it is an HP machine try F10, Dell try F2, if neither you can try F1, Delete, or Esc

From there you can use the on screen keyboard instructions to change the "BOOT ORDER"....Set the DVD ROM Drive listed higher than the Hard Drive and then it will check the DVD drive for boot files before moving on to the hard drive to try and boot.

This article may have some more detail for you...keep in mind this can be different with each manufacturer: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange_3.htm

If you dont know how...this is the last thing you should be doing
assuming that you realize formatting you had disk will result in a laptop without an OS (ie windows) just an error saying "invalid system disk"
go to dos by typing CMD into the run command
type
diskpart [enter] select disk 0 [enter] select partition 1 [enter] format [enter]

I m having pirated windows 7 in system. i want to install windows xp. what should i do?

Use your Windows XP installation CD and the product installation code that is on a label on the bottom of your Acer.
Boot up with this CD click install Windows, then delete the existing Windows partition, create a new partition, then format this partition (do a full format not a quick format) then continue the installation as per the screen instructions.
After installing Windows, install the Acer Aspire device drivers, Activate Windows via the Internet or by phone, install XP SP3 (service pack) and your programs.

I have a Toshiba A45-S121 laptop. I upgraded my hard drive from a 40GB hard drive to a 320GB Western Digital. Loaded Windows XP and formated drive in FPTS format. The computer rebooted to the hard drive...

Best possible solution put back your 40GB and try to get an external casing for your 320GB to see if it works. And try windows on NTFS instead of FPTS, so reformat your 320GB and install the Windows XP again.
I hope this solution is helpful.

My acer aspire one notebook its power its on but its not operating.

Hi there, remove the battery & run directly via power code. If nothing changed then, please restart your laptop when its booting press F8 key . You will find few option asking for selection. Select that by using up/down arrow key. Select " Last know good configuration" & press Enter. Next page asking for selecting operating system, for example: windows vista or Windows XP etc. Just select the operating system & press Enter again. ( Hope your laptop showing only one operating system ). Your laptop will start normally. After the if you seen the screen dark then press FN+Right arrow in key board(>). When you press FN + ( < ) or ( >) key that's time its working for brightness controlling for screen. Now if all well then fine other wise please let me know .
Another suggestion is run your Acer driver DVD for installing Display drivers. When finish restart your laptop and watch whats going. If no success then format the Operating system & reinstall again.

Thanks & waiting for your feedback

If repairing the XP installation is not solving your problem, you can try a clean install by formating your drive and re-installing XP.

How can I install Winxp on HP pavilion DV5 laptop ?

You're Hard Drive may be dead. If XP is starting to install and then it goes to the Blue Screen of Death, that's most likely your problem. There's a slight chance that you're power inverter has a fluctuating power level that is causing a disruption, but that's very unlikely. Have you done any tests with any boot CD's to check the hard drive's function?
