Question about BBB DiscStop Mountain Bike Disc Brake Pads 55204041 BBS53

I have XT Disc Brakes and just put new pads on front and rear, 1 set of Sintered and 1 set of Standard Blue. Once on and with Disc Pistons pushed back into caliper as far as they will go, the pads still drag on the rotor and wheels will spin less than one full revolution. Basically there does not seem to be enough clearance for the rotor to spin freely in the caliper. I never had this problem before, with both BBB and Shimano parts and its only with this new set of pads. Be grateful if you could help

Try taking out the pads and reseating them. I have found that sometimes the pads don't fully click into position and so they stick out a bit, which will cause minimal clearance and rubbing. Sounds like you have everything else in position correctly.

If this doesn't work, maybe you have a bad set of pads? happened to me recently on a set of Avid's.

Front Brake Caliper: All But FLSTS/FXSTS

Remove the front master cylinder reservoir cap to be able to check the fluid level as the caliper pistons are pushed back into the caliper because the fluid level may rise more than the 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) from the top level and you may have to remove some excess fluid if it does so. THEN loosen but do not remove both pad pins with a 12 point one quarter inch socket. THEN remove both metric caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper from the front forks and brake disc and pry the pads back to force all four caliper pistons into their bores. THEN once the pistons have been retracted, remove the pad pins and the brake pads.


Although the front and rear brake calipers except FXSTD models, use the same exact brake pad set the FXSTD does not and the FXSTD rear pads have a vertical slot cut into the pads. Be sure NOT to substitute front and/or rear brake pads for the other on these bikes. On the right side of the vehicle the pad with the two tabs installs on the inboard side of the caliper and on the left side of the vehicle, the pad with the two tabs installs on the outboard side of the caliper.


THEN install new pads into the caliper noting that the curved portion of the pad faces to the rear of the bike, and loosely install the pad pins until you hear an audible click from them. THEN re-attach the caliper to front fork, place the caliper over the brake disc with the bleeder valve facing upwards, loosely install the long caliper mounting bolt into the top hole on the fork leg, install the short mounting bolt into the bottom hole on the fork le, tighten the bottom mounting bolt to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm) and final tighten the top mounting bolt also to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm) and final tighten the two pad pins to 180-200 in-lbs (20.3-22.6 Nm).


THEN and whenever new pads are installed, before moving the bike pump the brakes until brake fluid pushes the caliper pistons and the pads out and verify that the pads are against the brake disc and then rotate the wheel to ensure there is not any excessive drag between the pads and the disc, check for proper fluid level in the reservoir and if necessary top it up with DOT 5 Silicone base brake fluid only, install the reservoir cover and tighten its screws to 6-8 in-lbs (0.7-0.9 Nm).


THEN and whenever any work has been done on brakes always test the brakes at low speed before operating on a roadway or at higher speeds. THEN test brake system light and if during the road test the brakes feel spongy at all bleed the system and after obtaining a hard lever or pedal road test the bike again.

Front wheel bearings


first check the pads have not worn down to metal if they have the disc will have to be replaced , if the disc is in good condition and the pistons are free press them back into the cylinders and then the pads can removed .check the master cylinder does not over flow as the pistons are pushed back. Brake fluid is a paint remover. the wheel bearings don't have to be touched to replace pads. After new pads are fitted the brakes will have pumped to bring the pads out to the disc.

If present, remove right saddlebag.
Remove the rear master cylinder reservoir cap. As the pistons are pushed back into the caliper, fluid level may rise more than 1/8 in. (3.2 mm). You may have to remove fluid to allow for this.
Loosen, but do not remove, both pad pins (12 pt/0.25 in.).
Pry the inside pad back. Use steady pressure to prevent scoring the brake disc. Pry between the pad and the brake disc in order to push the caliper pistons back into their bores.
Once the pistons have been fully retracted into their bores, pull pad pins part way until the inside pads drop free. Note the pad's original orientation for replacement purposes.
Install pad with two tabs on the inboard side of the rear caliper.
Install new inside brake pad using the same orientation as the pad previously removed. Curved portion of pad must face upward.
Install pad pins until the pins snap into place with an audible click. Do not fully tighten at this time.
Pump brake pedal lever to move inside pistons out until they contact inside brake pads.
Pry the outside pad back. Pry between the pad and the brake disc in order to push the caliper pistons back into their bores.
Verify that inside pads are captured between brake disc and pistons. Completely remove pad pins to free outside brake pad. Note the pad's original orientation for replacement purposes.
Install new outside brake pad using the same orientation as the pad previously removed. If the inside pad moved during the previous step, reinstall. Curved portion of pad must face upward.
Install both pad pins through holes in inner and outer
brake pads. Tighten to 180-200 in-lbs (20.3-22.6 Nm).

The minimum brake disc thickness is stamped on the side of the disc. Maximum brake disc lateral runout or warpage is 0.008 inch (0.2 mm) when measured near the outside diameter.
Replace brake pads if the friction material above the backing plate on either pad is 0.04 inch (1.02 mm) thick or less.

To remove the rear brake pads begin by removing the right side saddlebag, loosen both pad pins but do not remove them or installation of the new pads will be more difficult than needs to be, remove the rear master cylinder reservoir so you can se the fluid level as you push the pads and the pistons back as the level ma rise too much when the pistons are seated fully in their bores and you may have to see this and remove excess fluid, pry the inside pad back pushing the pistons fully into their bores using a putty knife with a wide thin blade to avoid scoring or scratching the brake disc. THEN when the pistons have been fully retracted pull the pad pins part way out until the inside pad drops free and note the orientation of the pad so that you can easily install the new pad in the same orientation with the curved portion of pad necessarily facing the rear of the motorcycle, install the new pad and install but do not tighten the pad pins, then pump the rear brake pedal to move the inside pistons out until they
they contact the inside brake pad, then using a putty knife with a wide thin blade to avoid scoring or scratching the brake disc pry the outside pad back in order to push those pistons fully into their bores, verify that the inside pad is captured between the brake disc and the pistons, completely remove the pad pins to free the outside brake pad. note the orientation of the pad before it falls out and install a new outside brake pad using the same orientation with the curved portion of pad necessarily facing the rear of the motorcycle and if the inside pad moved during the previous step reinstall it. Replacing one pad at a time keeps the anti-rattle spring in place and so if you wish to replace the spring you will have to remove both pads to remove and replace it. THEN inspect the pad pins for unacceptable wear/grooving and replace if and as necessary and install the two pad pins and tighten them to 180-200 in-lbs (20.3- 22.6 Nm). THEN pump the brake pedal to extend the pistons and move the brake pads out against the brake disc. THEN check that the brake fluid is at the proper level about 1/8 inch down from the top of the reservoir and add NEW D.O.T. 5 SILICONE BRAKE FLUID, if necessary, install the master cylinder reservoir cover and tighten the cover screws to 6-8 inlbs(0.7-0.9 Nm), install the right side saddlebag, turn on the ignition/Light Key Switch and observe proper operation of the brake light, safely test ride the motorcycle and if the brakes feel soft or spongy, bleed them until you get a firm, hard pedal. Allow the new pads to properly wear in to the disc by not doing hard stops for the first 100 miles (160 km).

After servicing the brakes in any way and before moving the motorcycle always pump the brakes to build brake system pressure and move the pistons and pads out against the brake rotor.

First remove the rear master cylinder reservoir cap and check the fluid level because as the pistons are pushed back into the caliper the fluid level will rise and you do not want it to overflow the reservoir and spill out and to avoid this you must remove sufficient fluid.
Second, loosen, but do not remove, both pad pins with a 12 point .025 inch socket wrench.
Thirdly pry the inside pad back using steady pressure and a sturdy scraper or large screw driver or similar suitable tool, prying between the pad and the brake disc in order to push the caliper pistons back into their bores.
Fourthly, once the pistons have been fully retracted into their bores, pull the pad pins out part way only until the inside pads drop free.Do not completely pull the pad pins out from the caliper at this time because completely removing the pad pins at this time will cause you unnecessary difficulty during re-assembly. ALSO carefully note and remember each pad's original orientation for so you can put the new pads into the correct position and orientation in the caliper. Note that the front left, and the front right (if the front right is present) and all of the rear brake calipers use the same exact brake pad set. Install the pad with two tabs on the inboard side of the rear caliper.
Fifthly install the new inside brake pad using the same orientation as the pad previously removed (with the curved portion of the pad facing the rear of the motorcycle.
Sixthly install the pad pins until the pins snap into place with an audible click but do not fully tighten them at this time.

How to replace front brake pads on 03 e350


May not be make and model exact Can't even start unless you got a couple of clamps, take off tire, you'll see the brakes above mounted on a shiny disc kinda like the big wheel on price is right, There will be to set pins on the top front and back, push them out and the whole brake system should just slip off, removing the worn pads here's the tricky part, it's easy but if done wrong or to fast you'll blow the seals and need new brake calipers. You should be able to see two round pistons, place a stick or plate (wood is preffered) across BOTH of these pistons and then use your clamp to SLOWLY push them down and back in,not easy and I need two clamps usually. TAKE YOUR TIME ON THIS PART! then when their flush clip in your new pads, place your caliper back on the price is right disc and put your set pins back in and your pretty much good to go. My Dad calls it nose bleed brakes cause your push on the pedal is just a touch now and you whack your head on steering wheel giving yourself a nosebleed!!!!

How to slacken rear brake shoes to replase disc


Hi Ricky

Your car has disc brakes so you need to release the brake pads not shoes (they are for drum brakes). That should help when you buy a new set.

Loosen the split pins which hold the pads in the caliper. You should then be able to push the pads out. It sounds like the pads are worn down so much that the caliper pistons are at their full reach.

Once you have slid them out, you need a piston retractor tool to push the pistons back in the caliper in order to be able to fit the new pads.

SLide the pads in, use copper grease on the back surface to stop them squeaking. Once done, pump the brake pedal to set the pads and the job is finished.

How do i release the brake caliper pistons to be able to fit new brake pads on a renault trafic 08 van. thank you


Renault trafic brake calipers on the front can be pushed in with a G-clamp, but rear calipers need to be wound in, if you look at the piston it has notches for a winding tool!

Are there any special tools needed to change the brakes on a 2006 toyota sienna? Standard two bolts that hold it on?


You will probably not need anything other than a metric socket wrench set.

Many Toyota models have disc brake calipers that will flip up or down when you remove one of the two bolts that hold the calipers on. I am not sure of the setup on the Sienna.

When you remove either the upper or lower bolt and move the caliper, you can then remove the old pads. Also, you will need to push the piston(s) back into their cylinders to give you enough space to install the new pads. A large C clamp will usually suffice to push in the pistons.

I assume that you are talking about the front (disc) brakes. Some autos still have drum brakes on the rear, and those are a different story. They require several specialty tools to remove and replace the shoes.
