Question about Garmin Nuvi 780 4.4 in. Car GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Hello. I have a problem that no one has seemed to be able to help me with. All i get is a dumbfounded look or scratch on the head. I have a Garmin Nuvi 780 GPS for the car. I do not have a cigarette lighter in the vehicle to power the GPS when the battery dies in it. This GPS does not have a user replacable battery for it. Yes i know i can buy one and unscrew and pry the GPS open and replace it but i dont want to do that every time the battery dies. What i am looking for is a portable power supply i can take in my vehicle that has a receptacle that i can plug the car charger made for my GPS into to. I tried the Gomadic rechargable battery pack and it was a joke. Will be sending that back. All i want to do is to be able to navigate while my GPS is plugged up to something to get power to it. Can anyone tell whay i need and where i can get it. I would very much appreciate it. JoAnn

Hi JoAnn, What you really need is a cigarette lighter socket in your car and this doesn't have to be a big problem. In most car accessory shops you can get cigarette lighter socket splitters, like the one at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-Cigarette-Lighter-Splitter-Adaptor/dp/B003TNYK7Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301407423&sr=8-1

Now I know these are supposed to plug into your cigarette lighter socket but you can remove the plug from the end of it and get wired directly to the fuse board of your car. The wire that goes to the centre tip of the plug connects to the positive/fuse of the fuse board and the wire that's connected to the outer part of the plug connects directly to an unpainted metal part of the car. You can do this by loosening a bolt, wrapping the wire around it and tightening it again. The block with the sockets on it can be either glued with double sided tape to a convenient part of your car interior or left loose if you prefer.

If you're not happy wiring it directly yourself it should not cost a lot to get done in a garage. If I was in your position that's what I'd do.

UPDATE TROUBLE

First thing to try is to stick the disc into a PC. It will either read no disc, or ignore that there is a disc there; or it may load the disc fine and either autorun or come up with a "what action do you want to take/disc format not recognised" type of message. If a PC will not read the disc, first check it visually for scratches - in particular near the centre, and especially if the scratch is going around the disc not across it. If nothing big visible, then try cleaning the disc with a soft damp cloth, a little water and some detergent - if you have to rub, go from the centre outwards not round and round. Try the disc again in your Garmin. If this doesn't work, check the foil side of the disc for damage - look real close. If there is any, then there are not many ways to fix it that are often successful or that will last for long. next to see is if you can polish any scratches out. Use a fine abrasive polish like Brasso with a soft cloth (not on the foil side). Start with the worst looking scratch, see if it will soften or polish out. Try the disc, then keep polishing each scratch in turn to see if you can get it working. You can buy little machines that do similar by polishing the whole disc, but they are normally more agressive than you need if scratches are the problem. If still no luck, then try Garmin for a replacement CD; http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/supportcontacts sorry I couldn't find any details on their site now (it's a huge site), but they used to replace damaged discs so long as you paid the postage and sent them a damaged legal copy first. Possibly now they do the same by download - check with them for a quick answer - their service is normally good. Please ask again if you need more info. Hope this helps :)

Hello,

Once the USB ANT Stick is connected it should automatically start downloading.

I cannot register my garmin nuvi 1450LMT. I have followed the instructions - and get part way, but seems the connection between Garmin and computer will not connect. HELP!

Hello,

The Garmin Communicator Plugin will need to be installed on the computer.
http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/

Also, you may want to check the data cable and that it is the proper one.
It should be Garmin part number 010-10723-01.

Hello, I have a model 1350 and it seems locked up and will not recieve satilite signals?

Hello,

Try giving your unit a firmware update using Garmins WebUpdater software, it can be obtained from this link http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp. If this dosent work your units GPS receiver is probably dead and should be sent in for repair.

Hope this helps!

Saved addresses and favorites can be removed 1 at a time.
