Reformat the drive and see if that helps.
On a Windows computer, just go to My Computer, right-click the drive and select Format Drive. Choose NTFS as your format.
On a Mac, go to Disk Utilities, select the Erase tab, choose the right drive, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Volume Format, name the drive and hit erase.
