Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell Inspiron 710m. I was running on batteries until I noticed that it was running low. I plugged my A/C adapter to recharge the battery but noticed that the pilot lamp of the adapter was not lit. The battery did not re-charge as well. When I removed the adapter from the notebook, the pilot lamp lit. Could this be just a simple failure of the power supply adapter or something in the laptop? I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Seems to me like an AC adapter problem. I think your adapter output power has degraded to a point that it no longer provides enough power to run the laptop & charge the battery at the same time.
I recommend that you refer to the following article for diagnosing the problem & fixing it:

My laptop wont turn on without a charger

If your laptop works fine while plugged in but stops working while unplugged it's likely that either your laptop battery is bad or your laptop is not charging the battery properly.

Below are steps that can be taken to help identify the cause of this issue. Leave power plugged in
Make sure the computer has been charging from the power plug for at least two hours before attempting to unplug it.
Remove and reconnect battery
In some situations the battery can become loose.
Removing it and then put it back into the laptop. Third-party utility
Use a third-party battery utility to determine the total capacity of the battery. For example, BatteryCare is a free software utility capable of doing this.
Replace battery or AC adapter If your computer is still in warranty we suggest skipping to the next step.
If the above steps have been completed, we suggest replacing the battery in the computer or AC adapter. In most situations it's a bad battery.
Hope this helps.

Battery won?t charge and AC adaptor not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just turned two years old.

After one year, my dell 6-cell battery started to falter, so Ipurchased a new 9-cell battery. This worked fine until a couple ofmonths ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought anew 65W Dell Inspiron 6000 ac adapter andit worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’tcharging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adapter andplugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.

This lasted only a short time until my Dell Inspiron 6000 batterywouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes thecomputer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought itmight still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Delladapter from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great.

When I removed the battery and started only fromAC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if thecomputer actually started, I received the start-up error “The Inspiron 6000 AC AdapterType could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, thecomputer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’tusually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery wasthe problem, I put the 6-cell Inspiron 6000 batteryback in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90Wadapter) my computer would at least start more consistently if pluggedin. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stopsrecognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power untilthe adapter is recognized again.

The problem is with the jack on the motherboard inside our Inspiron 6000’s. This is the jack you plug your power plug into on the back of the laptop.

Somehow the jack gets worn and does not make correct contact withthe laptop so the Laptop does not see the power supply as a legit Dellbrand. So the powersupply will not charge the laptop battery and run the laptop at the same time.

DC power jack repair guide. Do-it-yourself instructions.

Modern laptops are all sold with built-in wireless laptop ac adapter. Some power notebooks used by corporate road warriors will have powerfulcellular adapters that connect the laptop to the Internet via the cellphone infrastructure

A bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with dell pa 12,dell e1505 and Dell Inspiron 6000notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix theproblem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s stillunder warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you. Problem symptoms:

  • Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  • Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wigglethe power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  • The battery will not get charged.
  • When you plug ac adapter for laptop, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED * activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
To fix the problem, you have to take your laptop apart, remove the system board to resoleder or replace the DC-IN jack. dell pa 12 and Dell Inspiron 6000 disassembly guides will help you to remove the system board. Take a closer look at the power jack on the system laptop board witha magnifying glass. In most cases you get the power problem because ofa bad connection between the DC jack and the system board, you’ll see acrack between the DC jack connector and the system board.

Inspiron mini 10 Running on battery even when a/c is plugged in restart computer and plug in a/c again and charges up but then drains battery again

Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall. ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced.

Dell 1525 won't run on ac but will on generic battery

Dell systems will not charge the battery without a Dell Branded AC adapter connected to the system (The BIOS looks for the adapter ID and disables the battery charger if not ID'd)
It appears, that since the system will not power on with either AC adapter, that there is a problem with the power connection of the system. You can replace the power board

if that fails to resolve next is the motherboard

Dell Inspiron 710m doesn't turn on anymore

check if there is a light on the adapter or not. if there is a light on the adapter. it means the adapter is fine. even then if the computer is not turning on. the motherboard circuit is short, if you are comfortable you can fix it else replace the motherboard.

Laptop Battery won't charge

The chances of getting two bad batteries is slim, so we'll have to assume it's not the battery. I suggest you flash your bios if that has not been done recently.

You can download and install the newest from support.dell.com

I just put a replacement battery on my Inspiron 710M. On startup I get a message that says, "The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge batteries until this battery is removed."...

This battery is not compatible with this laptop. Dell batterys have a sensor that tells to laptop is it dell battery or not. Unfortunately you have to replace battery with correct one.

When turning on my Dell710M, I just get a black screen

Start with the basics, take out all the removable items (Battery, Modem, RAM, Drives, Wireless card) see if anything changes powering the system on via AC. If no change, then the motherboard is the most likely failure point. On my system, I had a broken AC plug (Adapter connector wobbled in the plug) and eventually the battery wouldn't change and system would not run on AC. I had to replace the motherboard to resolve.
