Question about Pentair Wf 6 1.5hp Whisperflo Inground Pool Pump

1 Answer

Whisperflo pool pump. Pump was trying to start but motor was humming then tripping breaker. I replaced the capacitor but had exactly the same problem. As there was some sign of salt around backing plate, I replaced the mechanical seal. Still same problem. If I very gently touch the fan, the motor kicks in and runs for as long as I leave it on. I tried to turn it off for 15 minutes, then on again and it starts instantly but leaving it off overnight and then turning on again the next morning, the motor will not turn until the fan is touched again. I am at a total loss as to what to try next so any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thank you for posting your question here on

Your motor's internal starting switch is either out of alignment or broken. It is usually not a job the average do-it-yourselfer can fix but if you want to try you will need to take the pump and motor back apart only this time going further by removing the motor thru-bolts and then driving out the rotor/shaft assembly. Be careful to note the orientation of all the bearing spacers and spring(s) for reassembly. Once apart the switch will be on the endbell behind the fan.

An electric motor repair shop should be able to inspect this for you. If the motor or only the switch needs to be replaced they too should have the part or motor to get he pump back to fully operational.

I have a brand new 1 1/2 hp superflo. I wired it in and turned on the power, it hummed for a few secounds and trip the breaker. now it it wont work and just immediatly trips the breaker. Any ideas as

It sounds like the motor shaft is stuck. The back end of the motor has an end cap that comes off so you can access the end of the motor shaft. Try this with the power off; Remove the cap (center rear of the motor),Using an open ended 9/16 wrench you should be able to turn the shaft back and forth. A motor that has sat for a while will sometimes act like yours did. A nudge with the wrench usually breaks it free. Remove your wrench and turn pump on. If it still won't start the motor may be defective.

A.O smith pool pump tripping breaker

It you either have an impeller problem or capacitor problem on the motor. I would take the capacitor off and take it to a electronic or lexical shop to have them check it. It's only about 15 to 20 dollar pics if it's just your capacitor.

A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if answer is helpful for your question. THANK you and GOD BLESS YOU.

Pool pump hums/buzzes for few minutes then quite with no pumping the whole time

Many pump motors have capacitors or dual windings to get them started, it sounds like yours failed. Get the numbers off the MOTOR and call some electric motor rebuilders to get the best price.

Whisperflo Pump 1.5 Hp problem

The pump is probably fine the motor is the problem. If it just hums it might just be the capacitor on top of the motor. Don't know how long it sat there not able to start. Was the motor extremely hot ? If it got too hot may have damaged the motor. Motor is replaceable without replacing the pump head.

Our Whisperflo pool pump has stopped working and there is a ERR5 message on the indoor control display. I notice a slight burning smell around the pump. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have a bad run capacitor and/or start capacitor. Assuming your bearings are good and the motor spins freely, have you noticed any loud noises, i.e humming, etc.? Sometimes capacitors can go bad. You can check the capacitor by removing that "hump" cover on the top of the motor, if it looks "bloated" it's bad. Be very, very care not to touch the electrical contacts due to high voltage stored in the capacitor. If this is a chronic problem, you may be developing a short in the motor windings and will have to eventually replace the motor. Hope this helps
