Well whirlpool has good parts supply and you can find a dealer close by probably ,but what the board does is time things on and off and does it with the sensor input,termostat,defrost cycle timer and so on. So even if you replace the board you could very well have the same problem because a sensor or thermostat isn't giving the board what it needs. Check out the inputs to the board to see if you can find any physical issues with them or check the voltage inputs to see if you are getting a reading on each. The thermostat is what turns it off and on most of the time so you could have a bad thermostat and the fridge will only cycle if the temp is below the set temp,you are just bypassing that input when doing a direct connect
