Does your unit have the locking switch? Could be the problem.

OK. No problem. Welcome to FixYa. More then likely, something is loose. Is this the only issue you are having? Do you have to slam it everytime? Have you checked for loose connections on the board?

Have to slam the lid so that the washer will start.

It is a faulty switch about to go bad that interupts the signal for safety. Repair Clinic.com sells them. Enter the make and model number then order it. Easy to change out ususally.

My machine won't start unless I slam the door on my front loader really hard. It is getting worse. Can I disconnect the lock temporarily until I get a replacement?

Tighten the screws that hold the door lock in place.
You may also need to replace the part on the door
that goes into the switch.
Check the door or warping and try to bend it back into position.

Top loader washing machine - won't work unless I slam down the top door. Any suggestions? Thanks

I think it is in the lid switch. If the lid switch is malfunctioning on a maytag top loader it will not start washing. Probably by slamming the lid you are making the connection you need for the time being. It is located at the back underneath the lid in the middle. Follow the link and you will see and diagram and parts associated with your washer. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=A4910&productCategoryId=0153000&brandId=3048&modelName=MAYTAG-LAUNDRY&diagramPageId=00002&componentDescription=TOP COVER, CONSOLE & LID SWITCH

I fixed mine with a toothpick and a piece tape. Make the tab on the door longer that activates the switch. Try triming the lid bumpers
