A method you can try if you don't have a password reset software is by removing the CMOS battery. Remove the CMOS battery then turn the computer on. The system BIOS will be reset and password will be removed.

Find the battery on the motherboard - it looks like a small silver coin. Ease it out of its clip noting which way it goes and then insert the new on in its place. When replacing the new battery handle it carefully. Only handle it by its edges. Do not hold it between your fingers as the battery will discharge quite rapidly through your fingers. This could be what happened with the "new" battery.

Unable to log into desktop - locked me out

If you have forgotten your Windows login password then you can download a copy Hiren's Boot CD which is a CD image file (.ISO) then burn this to a blank CD and boot your computer from this.

On the initial Hiren's boot menu, select the option for:

Offline NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 Password Changer

and then follow the guided prompts shown on the further menu panels.

This tool will allow you to reset your Windows login password to all blanks (i.e. no password).

Welcome to Fixya

Lenovo is not putting any password especially with the BIOS bacause this can be customized by the user. If you purchased this to a retail store then you need to contact them regarding this issue. If you purchased the computer via Lenovo website then you need to contact our support number 1-877-453-6686 then press option 2.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Bios locked out

If you know how to dissemble your computer and are comfortable with it, open it and remove the CMOS battery, wait about 10 minutes, put it back and turn on your machine. All BIOS settings should have been restores to factory defaults, including passwords. Hope this is helpful.

How to get my computer unlocked have forgotten

If you've forgotten the BIOS password you need to short the CMOS by setting the jumpers or remove the battery.

If you've forgotten your Windows password you can download a program here and burn it to disc and follow the instructions.

Supervisor password

A Supervisor password protects the system information stored in the BIOS. The user must enter the Supervisor password in order to get access to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup Utility in order to change the system configuration. If the Supervisor password is forgotten there is no way to reset it to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a Supervisor password automatically sets the master Hard drive password. The following is the icon that comes up in the upper left corner if a Supervisor password is set:
A forgotten Supervisor password will prevent access to the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility. To regain access, the system will need to be serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.

Entering BIOS settings, Easy-Access, after POP, with external KB

The Power On Password problem is near impossible to crack. It is designed to prevent unauthorized access to the Thinkpad and removing the BIOS battery will not remove the password because the password is stored on an EEPROM chip.
There are no backdoor passwords available, the only option is to ask the person who set the password.
OR
There is a way to hack into the Thinkpad to see and remove the password but it requires electronic skills, a program and a working computer.

My thinkpad (X60s) will not start... when I try to start it, a lock icon shows up on the screen and no key seems to work...

This is a power on password set in bios. The keys appear not to work because it does not show anything you type. If it is a lock icon in the top right corner of the screen with a cursor next to it that is your problem. And we are not sure if there is a global passwork for the thinkpad, for this you would have to call IBM
