Hi what justin said is mostly correct, but this unit doesn not have coils underneath so you cannot clean from the kick plate, you will need to remove the rear panel behind the refrigerator and you will find the coils to the right by the condenser fan at the bottom. And freon leaks on this model are less than 2% of our repairs. Your more than likely have a bad fan or a intermittent motherboard depending on the age, I would need to know the age to be more specific. If you have any more questions let me know.

Hello Drhoffs,

I understand that you are having a problem with you GE Refrigerator. The unit is blowing some cold air but not cold enough to keep items in the Freezer frozen. There are a few possible problems that can cause this situation:
1. Condensation coils are dirty
2. Fan not working (unplug unit)
3. Freezer coils are ice up (unplug unit)
4. Low on Freon (requires a service Tech and can be expensive)

Lets take this one step at a time thru the possible causes of the issue:

1. Condensations coils are dirty: You will need a vacuum with a crevice tool or air compressor or a long handle skinny brush>
a. Remove the kick plate on the bottom of the fridge
b. Use the above mentioned tools to remove all debris from underneath the fridge in the coils this can be accomplished from the front and back of the fridge
c. Once done reinstall the front kick plate
2. The Fan (if you can not hear the fan then follow these steps)
a. Remove all items from the Freezer
b. Remove the rear panel inside of the Freezer compartment
c. Locate the fan notice if the is turning if not remove and got to local hardware store and purchase a new one
d. Reinstall everything in reverse
3. Freezer coils
a. Remove all items from the Freezer
b. Remove the rear panel located in the back of the Freezer
c. Use a fan or heat source to speed the defrosting of the unit (it is also a good idea to put a cloth or something in the bottom of the Freezer to collect the water so that the Freezer pan does not over flow.)
d. Reinstall all items in reverse
4. Freon Level: This requires a licensed service technician and can be costly, weight the cost of the service call and repair to the cost of a new unit. If the cost to repair is more than half the price of a new unit purchase a new unit.

Thank you for choosing FixYa.com

I have a Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator. The freezer is not cooling enough to keep frozen. It is blowing cold air and the refrigerator part seems to be working.

If your freezer is cold then you may have a defrost cycle issue. There are typically three components for the defrost cycle. Heater bar, thermostat and timer. If the defrost system fails ice starts to build up in the back of the freezer until it prevents cold air from getting into the fridge. When I took off the back panel inside my freezer it was a block of ice. You can melt the ice with a hair dryer and order new parts.

Freezer not freezing, some things are not frozen solid, but fridge seems to be cooling properly

One thing to do is clean the coils around the compressor so that air can move freely over them.

My hotel room ac is blowing cold air just not strong enough to cool entire room

It may be frozen over. At the front of the unit there should be an air filter. May be behind a panel that opens, or it may slide out. Behind that filter will be the indoor coil or evaporator coil. Look to see that coil and if there is any ice on it. It will be a white ice covering the coil. If it's frozen up, turn the cooling mode to off, turn the fan mode to on, and let it run at least a couple of hours to thaw. Let maint. know it's frozen up and needs service. Get what you pay for! If it's not frozen up, find some way to check the supply air temp. Some sort of a thermometer. It should have a 50-60°f supply air temp, depending on the indoor temp. Most I've seen will supply 45°f, but 50-60 is a good reference. Hope this helps! I bet it's frozen up.

Refrigerator portion on top does have cooling but freezer on bottom works fine. I have read that the cooling all happens in the bottom and a fan transfers cool air to the the top.

if the fridge part is cool and freezer is fine what problem are you having?is the fridge not cold enough? a common problem with bottom mount freezers is the freezer door doesn't get closed all the way, warm air enters the freezer mixes with the zero degree air and freezes up the air ducts, when you open the freezer door you should hear the fan blowing,if it is check the ceiling in the freezer to see if ice is on it,check the packages for frozen water droplets and stick your hand in the fridge where the air ducts are to see if you can feel cold air blowing into the fridge,if you can't feel air blowing into the fridge, unplug it,open the freezer door, remove the top basket and remove all the food out of the bottom basket, with a hair dryer blow into the back wall into the vent holes and melt out all the ice in the ducts, you'll see water dripping down through the vent holes, when the water stops dripping plug it back in and see if the fan is blowing the air into the fridge.also you can remove the bottom kickplate and you should see a tech sheet in it,read it and it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost,it will stay in defrost for like 20 minutes, you can do this instead of unplugging it, there's a heater that comes on behind the back panel in the freezer, this can help you melt out the ice but if it seems to hard to do just unplug it.

I turned the fridge side off on mine, and left it overnight (last night!). This morning there is frozen stuff in the freezer. I think the compressor motor just needed ALOT of time to cool down b4 it would work properly again

Kenmore fridge

You didn't give much info to go on..

If it's NOT a side by side and the freezer is on top AND the freezer is working, then it could be a couple of things:

Bad blower in freezer (which blows air down to the fridge portion)

Blocked/frozen air tube between freezer and fridge.

Hope that helps...

Fridge problems - frigidaire

Sort of sounds like the adaptive defrost board is bad and you are not going into a defrost cycle. Do you have ice build up on the lower interior freezer section? Are the vent slots full of frost/ice? Ideally, pull the freezer shelfs out and take the little aluminum panel off the interior back to look at the coils. Are they basically a block of ice and frost? The problem happens when the unit doesn't go into defrost cycle and the coils freeze up. That blocks the air flow in the freezer so you get frozen food at the bottom but soft stuff at the top. And the frige just can't get enough cool/cold air from the freezer section to cool anymore. Power surges or blackouts, etc. can just destroy the defrost circuit board. Without good air flow the unit is not going to cool properly.
