Question about Cambridge Soundworks CD-740 Clock Radio

1 Answer

Dvd's freeze on my cambridge soundworks. any easy fix? It has also started creating a slowmo jerking effect. The slowmo problem can usually be overcome by hitting stop and start, but the freezing issue does not go away, sometimes we are unable to continue with the disk.

Thanks for the info. I'll try cleaning it first, as it is off warranty.

The two most likely causes for those symptoms are a dirty laser lens, or a dying drive motor.

If you are fortunate, then it is just a dirty / dusty laser lens and you can use one of those DVD / CD Lens Cleaner Kits to clean it off. You can pick them up at any electronics store and they are usually less than $20.

If you are not so lucky, then it is a failing drive motor in the disk spinning assembly. These are almost never cost effective to replace since the motor is just one part of a larger complicated assembly. You can bring it in to a shop to have them take a look at it, but most times it will cost nearly as much to fix the unit as it would to buy a brand new one. And obviously a new one would come with a full warranty which the repaired unit would not. So the choice is up to you, just be aware of the possibility that a repair may not be cost effective.

If you are extremely lucky, and the unit is still under warranty then bring it back right away to your place of purchase and get a refund or exchange.

Of course I am assuming this is happening to all the DVDs you play in the unit, and is not just a case of a single dirty or scratched DVD.

If you can see and access the laser lens fairly easily, you can also use a QTip dipped in some Isopropyl Alcohol to clean it.

The Isopropyl Alcohol can be purchased at any drug store, just try to avoid regular Rubbing Alcohol which has extra undesireable ingredients.

Just dip one end of the QTip in the alcohol, wipe it across the lens, and then wipe it once more right after with a dry QTip to clean off the excess alcohol, then just allow the rest to evaporate away.

This may save you a few dollars or make a suitable alternative if you cannot find a lens cleaning kit at your local electronics store.

    Good luck.

    Joe.

Cd won't go into the cd slot on the Soundworks--any suggestions?

As far as I know, SoundWorks speaker systems don't have a CD slot. Why would they?
They're supposed to be connected to a computer, which has a CD/DVD drive.
