I have a kitchen aid side by side with a slide out bottom freezer. The ice maker motor is not functioning properly. It is making a grinding noise like it is stuck. It is not making ice. I removed the motor cover and it states not to manually move the motor dial. The model is KBFA20ERBL01

Hi michael_d40,

With the issue that you have relayed, that the ice maker is no longer working you may be at the early stage of defrost problem. There's a certain temperature that the ice maker needs to be, to make ice. There will be no ice production if the temperature is too warm and if something is going on inside your machine. If this will be the case try the simple steps below:

1. Try putting a thermostat inside the freezer to see what the temperature is.
2. It should be at least Zero.
3. If not, turn the temperature of your refrigerator to the next coldest setting inside the freezer.
4. Let it go for a day and see if the machine starts to make ice.

If this will not work, you may take a look on another possible cause of the problem which is the Fill tube for the Ice Maker may be froze. If you look at the ice machine inside your freezer you will notice a tube entering it from the rear wall, it's your fill tube. Here's how you can check it:

1. Check the tube if it's blocked with ice. If so, that's the problem.
2. You may use a hairdryer to thaw it out and your machine will be making ice before you know it.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Could some please post how to remover the ice maker from my kitchen aid model ktrc 19 m refrig thank you

Look right above the icemaker part that forms the cubes. Its usually brown in color, Just above it are 2 extensions of that brown part that has 2 screws going into the left side of the freezer, Remove the 2 screws and the unit comes out. The power plug for it is just to the back bottom of the ice maker. If you can see it you can probably just unplug it to stop the noise.

Ice maker makes grinding noise (no ice)

Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

Ice maker makes too much ice

In my Kitchen Aid bottom freezer there is a metal arm(?) that I lift up to stop the ice maker from making ice. When I start running low on ice, I push the metal arm(?) back down for it to make ice again. Hope this is the solution for your Kitchen Aid too.

Keeps making ice, i can't seem to make it stop.

You have an emitter and receiver in the freezer section...Actually when you slide the lever on the right side in the middle of the freezer section, you break the beam...and it is suppose to stop the ice maker from harvesting ice anymore. If this shut off device fails, it can fail in the on position and continue to make ice. Replace this assemlby sold in a kit and you will be fine. In the mean time, if you can remove the ice maker head and unplug it, that will stop the ice until you can replace the emitter and receiver assembly. You can also shut the water off but the ice maker will continue to operate, just not dispense ice. If extending and waiting on this repair you should disconnect the ice maker.....

A creaking noise when the freezer is opened & then closed

In some freezers they build up excessive vacuum which pulls the plastic housing away from the internal polyurethane insulation, hence the creaking sound. You can make a vacuum breaker by attaching a small stick or similar to the bottom of the door gasket, this will break the vacuum without losing temperature.

Amana Bottom Freezer door when shut starts a noise

The light is switched on and off by a small lever which is pushed when closing or opening the door. This operates a microswitch. It would not make any grinding noise. Grinding noise can come from the fanmotor which would also stop when the fridge door is open.
