Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Ruud condenser on which I just replaced the capacitor and contactor. When I power up, the fan motor spins very slowly and a buzzing occurs about every 15 seconds. The buzzing sounds like it's coming from the compressor. Before I replaced the components mentioned, I noticed that a Diversitech Torque Plus unit was attached to the capacitor. Any ideas?

Hello Zing77,

I understand that you are having a problem with your Rudd condensor. The fan is turning slowly and the compressor is making a buzzing noise which has a Diversitech hard start conected to the capcitor.

You have already replaced the run capcitory on the unit and have attached the compressor wire to therm and c and the fan to therm and fan. The hard start kit shoudl be attached to the therm and c with your compressor wires attached to the same place. The hard start kit is to give the compressor the extra push (electrical charge) to start.

You need to check your connections and make sure that you purchased the proper run capcitor. If you have purchased the proper compacitor and the connections are right then you have a bad fan and the compressor as gone out on the unit.

Thank you for choosing FixYa.com

I have a Ruud AC Model UAMBO48JAZ That has started to have a hum when it is running it is cooling and has been checked for freon. Could it be the capacitor?

More than likely, it is the hum of the coil in the contactor. Generally, residential uses 24 volts to energize the coil built into the contactor which pulls in a set of contacts (hence the name contactor) to send 220 volts to power the compressor & condenser fan motor. Contactors are relatively inexpensive... so if the noise bothers you, replace it or have it replaced. Put your mind @ ease, the humming noise will do no damage.

Ruud ubhc-17j11sfd the outside unit wont come on for AC. I checked the breakers in the main breaker panel for the house. The fan inside works.

Hi!!
Did you check if the outside fan is working?? On the summer time the failure of condenser fan motors increases due to hi temps.
Have somebody turn unit on as usual while outside you check if condenser fan is turning and if the compressor kicks in. If the fan motor do not work, the compressor will shut of to prevent damage..
If either one of them tries to start but can't take off, replace starting capacitor, some units have separate capacitors and some have combo capacitors, they work the same.
If after replacing the capacitor the fan motor still don't want to start up, replace motor. If Compressor do not want to start, call a HVAC Technician to perform further testing.

How do I troubleshoot a ruud a/c fan motor

You can disconnect the compressor from the contactor and wire the motor up to the 220 to see if
fan will run. If fan turns hard by hand, replace motor otherwise you may just have to replace the capacitor.

Have a Ruud Achiever Model number UAKA-037JAZ that won't run since yesterday. When the air kicks on it simply makes a buzzing noise and the fan doesn't spin. Can anyone help?

try spinning by hand when the unit make the buzzing sound. to see if the capacitor is bad. If the fan runs replace the cap. If not motor probably is bad. See if it spins freely. this is a good starting place. need to check if the buzzing is the contactor and there is no power to the condensor. The contactor will buzz even though the main breaker is off or tripped

The outside fan motor (OFM) will not turn off.

it sounds like your fan connector is on the same side of the contactor where your high voltage enters you should have 3 wires 1 wire for each pole of the contactor and 1 wire off the capacitor does the compressor run all the time too? try turning the power switch off on your indoor air handler / gas furnace if the power goes off the fan goes off then it could be low voltage wiring

Condenser is buzzing so there is power, but the

The buzzing sound is from the contactor and only means you have low voltage at the unit,Check and make sure you have 240 volts at the unit and post back.

Fan does not turn but motor seems to be running fine

Rain should not affect an outdoor unit. It is designed to be outside. The motor that you are hearing... could this just be your compressor running? If the condenser fan is not operational the compressor will run much louder. TURN THE POWER OFF! See if the fan will spin freely if it is pushed. If it doesn't replace the fan motor. If it does you need to check the power at the contactor going to the condenser fan motor. This is 220 volts BE CAREFULL.. If power is going to the motor and the motor is not running... Change the motor and capacitor. If no power is going to it it could be a bad contactor.
Good luck....

It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.
