Question about Intermatic Hardware & Accessories

1 Answer

I have one of your timers that controls my porch lights. It is the type that can be used instead of a indoor light switch. I have tried to set it since the change to daylight savings time numerous times and it will not hold the settings. It turns my lights on at all different times. I have even disconnected and re-installed it without any luck. I am at my wits end. What can be done to resolve this problem? Thanks.

Installed light fixture & Now No Light

It would be helpful to know which timer you have. But from what you mention, there is another switch involved. Was this on a three-way circuit? That is, was this light controlled by two separate switches? In that case, you need to know which wire goes to the live and which to the light. Not easy without a tester.

Other than that, send us the switch make and model number and we can look at the wiring diagram. Cheers.

I want to replace my existing single bulb porch light with a 2 bulb motion activated light. It would be operated with the existing switch. Is this ok to do?

Yes. Must keep switch turned ON.
Outdoor lights will only come on when motion is detected, otherwise light bulb does not come on. So the indoor wall switch does not work as override since the motion sensor takes over as the sole switch.
Copy following link for wiring illustrations:

Other solutions include adding separate motion sensor light nearby and keep porch light so you can turn on-off when desired.
Another option is to add photocell to outdoor light so it turns on automatically at dusk.
Another option is to use outdoor yard timer with dawn-dusk capability:

Another option is to replace indoor wall switch with with dawn-dusk timer, that can also be used as ordinary on-off switch so you can turn porch light on-off when desired. Timer such as Intermatic ST01C offers simple 2-wire connection.:

THIS SITE KEEPS POSTING ANSWERS THAT ARE TOTALLY UNRELATED TO MY QUESTION

Try posting your question in a more appropriate area of FixYa. From what I can tell, you're asking about a porch light timer of some type. You've posted twice in the "Cars & Trucks" area and three times in the "Digital Cameras" area. Your questions are seen by experts in those areas, none of whom may know anything about porch light timers.

Programable light switch

Switch is not identified.
Switch might be bad. Replace the switch.
Copy following link to see switch wiring diagrams:

If you have a timer, such as EJ351, then timer can go bad even when light is working correctly.

You want to control each light with different programming?
Westek TE05 timer is single-channel timer, so different lights cannot be controlled by different programs.

You need a two-channel timer so each light can come on at different times.

Zilla timers are two-channel timers: yellow outlets for daytime, and blue outlets for nighttime.

How do I set it and can I use it indoors?

I see nothing in the manual that says 'outdoor use only' EXCEPT timer runs on photoelectric eye.
Timer turns ON automatically at dusk, so if timer is inside, and indoor lights are ON, then timer stays OFF.

To use timer outdoors.
Plug timer into wall.
Timer turns ON automaically at Dusk.
Rotate dial to set how long timer will stay ON.
Set timer to turn OFF 2 4 6 8 Hours after dusk
Set timer to turn off at dawn
Set timer to ON so lights are ON full time
Set timer to OFF so lights are off full time.
