The above suggestions are the easiest to do first, but I've found that all the mechanisms of the machine work except that the pick-up rollers won't drop down. This is a mechanical error in the cluster of gears that you can see when you open the top cover. If you look through the top left opening you can see the cluster of white gears that sit on a metal plate just below the top metal paper guide. Very carefully give the gears a little squirt of WD40 and move them around with your fingers as much as you can(very small opening and you may have to use a tool, be gentle). There is also a black and white coupling to the left and above these gears that you can push to the left a couple of times to insure that is not binding. Worked for me.

Hi Louise,

The HP officejets usually have problems with paper handling so here's a few things to check and try:

  1. Make sure you haven't made the paper guides in the trays too tight. If they are the paper won't be able to move

  2. Check that paper has been loaded properly by looking at the indicator for max height, and the paper size marking on the bottom of the tray. If you push the paper in too far or the paper is loaded too high this also causes problems with feeding

  3. Tray #2 is a special case as sometimes the printer doesn't sit properly on top and fails to grab the paper properly. The solution is to lift the printer off the expansion tray and then put it back in position again. You may have to repeat this a couple of times until it gets into synch.

  4. Also worth noting that Tray #2 needs to be enabled in the driver settings for your printer so:
    • START
    • Printers & Faxes
    • Locate the printer then right click on it
    • Choose Properties
    • Click on the "Device Settings" tab
    • Make sure the "Form to Tray assignment" > Tray 2: setting has the correct paper/media set
    • Make sure the "Installable Options" > Tray 2 setting is "Installed"

  5. Final solution to try is a different brand of paper, cheaper is often better.. HP Officejets can sometimes be really fussy about the paper they will and won't work with.

If none of these have any effect and the printer is in warranty you could try for a warranty replacement but if you're a bit more technically minded it's likely that the rubber pick up wheels/rollers are in need of some TLC in which case something like this may help:

Note: I've found that after cleaning the rollers can become too clean so a quick run round with your finger to add in some grease and dust (sounds insane but it works) can resolve the issue.

Hopefully you'll find the solution in there somewhere. Good luck :)

Hp c6180 won't print from 4x6 photo paper tray

If you put regular paper in the tray as it is asking does the printer use the regular paper to print the picture? If so, be sure the 4x6 photo paper tray (with photo paper) is pushed all the way in, and when you select print there should be an option (probably hidden in a submenu) to select the photo tray as the paper source. If you are printing from Adobe Acrobat, I have not found a reliable way to get the c6180 to use the photo paper tray. I hope this helps.

I can't get anything to print from tray 1, the manual feed. I'm trying to print envelopes and they keep printing on 8.5x11 paper from tray 2. If I put envelopes in tray 2 it won't print

Have you already tried this? After you click print and select your printer, click properites and select your paper from 8.5x11 to Envelope.

913 service motor error

If this is the first time you have seen this error, do the following:
  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Remove all installed paper trays.
  3. Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in each tray. If it is not, reload the paper into that tray.
  4. Look up into the printer where the paper tray slides in and out. Check the feed (autocompensator) assembly for any damage.
  5. If everything is fine, reinstall the tray and power on the printer.
  6. Try printing a few print jobs.
  7. If the error does not return, continue using the printer as before. Keep an eye on it for the next few days. If the error does not return, it may have been an isolated incident.
  8. If the error returns just as soon as you power on the printer or when you try to print again, you will need to find out which paper tray/paper source is causing the problem.
  • If the printer has only the one integrated paper tray, the problem will be with either the tray 1 pick arm/autocompensator assembly or the printer's engine/system board.
  • If the printer has more than one paper tray installed, try printing from each paper tray one at a time. The best way to do this is to have all of the paper trays empty and then proceed as follows:
    1. Put paper in tray 1 only.
    2. Print from tray 1.
    3. If tray 1 works fine, empty tray 1 and put paper in tray 2 and so on until you encounter the error message.
    4. If you receive the error when printing from one particular tray, power off the printer to clear the error.
    5. Power the printer back on.
    6. Skip the faulty paper feed slot and move on to the next one (if another one is present). If you can print from all but one of the paper trays, this is the source of the problem.

If you have extra paper trays/drawer units installed and the error occurs from only one particular source, there are some things you can do as a temporary fix.
      • If the error is occurring from an OPTIONAL paper drawer/source, power off the printer and remove the defective drawer from the printer. You will then need to set up the printer to print from a different tray. For information on removing an optional drawer, click here.
      • If the error is occurring from the integrated paper tray (tray 1) AND you have optional paper trays installed, take all of the paper out of tray 1 but leave tray 1 installed. Set up the printer to print from one of the other paper tray sources (tray 2, tray 3, multi-purpose feeder, etc.).
    7. And if your getting the same error then you need to get it serviced...
