Question about Canon Cameras

5 Answers

My canon ixus 65 digital camera got damp in a downpour despite being in a pocket of a waterproof and in its case. When i took it out at home and let it dry out it no longer works. The lens cover is half open and after putting the recharged battery back nothing happens when i press the on switch.

I am not convinced that advice to take it to a canon service centre is a demonstration of expert advice. I visited this site as an alternative to sending it off to canon where I expect a significant charge will be incurred just to look at it.

The rice solution at least suggests some thought about drying out the camera.

As the fee has been taken already, without my accepting a solution, the situation is academic.

My learning is that these items need to be treated a disposable as their technological life is so short they are beyond repair before the are purchased.

    Goodbye

First check your guaranty, if it is still valid use guaranty, tell them the camera went fault of its own on a wet day.
All you can do is taking apart camera and drying it with the phone. If you see oxide on contacts you can remove it with circuit cleaning solution.
If it still does not work you can buy a guaranty extension, or take camera to a repair shop, as water has caused some component to short, usually they replace internal board.
I am afraid these are the only options.

Just make sure it's completely dried inside & out:

try using a power adaptor for power, it got damped with the batteries inside, so try another power source.

any electronic gadget that comes in contact with moisture / water, you know what happens.

Yes it's a very common problem for your model camera. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Been out in the rain and despite covering my digital slr it may have got damp. Now it won't switch from manual to auto focus even though the switch moves. Is gentle drying likely to cure the problem?

Took lens off the camera and let it dry out in gentle heat over a period of five hours. The problem seems to be solved.
Moral of this story; don't put too much faith in waterproof covers during very heavy downpours!
