Question about Ovens

Open Question

I have an old Thermador wall mount double (microwave on top). There is a name plate between the microwave door and frame showing catalog number MTR 24-4. The spring assist on the thermal oven door have broken (both sides). How do I replace them? It appears that the oven needs to be removed from the wall or from the frame that is in the wall. Is this right? Going along that same path, it appears that there are four screws in the front that need to be removed and four screws on the back wall that need to be removed. Is that right. I removed the door and the four in front (wood/sheetmetal screws) and the additional four in front (machine screws, located about one inch inboard of the wood/sheetmetal screws. That's when I realized I was in trouble as the lower left machine screw no longer aligns with the hole and I can't seem to get it to line up. So I decided to ask around about the screws on the back wall before removing them. Do the screws on the back wall need to be removed to get the oven out of the frame to ultimately get at the springs? If not, how can I access the springs?

SOURCE: The door on my Okeefe and Merritt antique stove

O'Keefe and Merritt is always a challenge to the inexperienced because, although two stoves of the same year and model can look identical, there are subtle differences in both, especially in the door spring mechanism, that make it difficult to explain without seeing the stove and/or asking you a series of questions in person. Here it goes anyway: Some models have access panels that are visible when you pull out the broiler drawer. This makes changing a spring a breeze, as long as you know which spring you need. A sample of a broken one, or and intact one always helps when buying a replacement. Other models operate on a system of hooks, cables and springs. These often require a skilled technician to come out and repar for you. Most of the time, the door has to be physically removed from the frame so that new cables (and sometimes rods) can be installed on the hinge and then the door would have to be re-installed fishing the cables through a small opening on the bottom of the stove. A spring then attaches to the cable and the hook of the spring is then attached to one of three small aligned holes on the bottom stove panel.
One constant i s that there are 2 sets of springs for each of the door panels. You are right, there are springs in the middle. And you are also right that the white panel removes from the door after you remove the truss head sheet metal screws.
You might want to give me a call and chat about this further at RMR Company, Inc (RMR Stove Company) 619-231-2808

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Yes this has been a fairly common issue with the Thermador wall ovens as well as their freestanding ranges.

Typically the remedy will be replacing the hinges, but there is a "fix" you can attempt in the interim. At least in hope of keeping the oven light from being on all the time, hence damaging the control board which houses the oven lights transformer.

The issue with those Thermador wall oven and freestanding range doors ( especially on the freestanding "professional" line ) is the weight of the door is so great, the hinge will actually move slightly over time, other times the entire hinge will need to be replaced.

This is what I'd recommend ( also official Thermador remedy, rest assured as I am a authorized factory trained Thermador service provider ) before pronouncing the hinges need replacing though.

**This does require a somewhat involved repair, so if you don't feel completely comfortable or have any reservation to trying this, please call in an local authorized Thermador ( B/S/H/ ) service provider.**

Recommendation: Adjust the door box hinge per instructions below.

1. Pull the oven away from the wall about 12".

2. Remove the hinge box cover plates.

3. Remove the vertical side trim piece. It covers one of the screws that must be loosened.

4. Loosen the 4 screws that secure the hinge box.

5. Place a rolled up dishtowel at the bottom of the door and close the door and apply light pressure to the door while re-tightening the four screws.

See fig below

6. Re-install the hinge box covers & side trims.

7. Re-install and secure the oven.

That should do it, ( or as stated, improve the situation ) if the hinges are too far gone they will need to be replaced unfortunately.

Let me know if you require further assistance or if indeed this solved your problem.

Thank you for choosing FixYa today and good luck going forward.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

This may be the thermal fuse mounted on the back panel or you may have a failed control. We rebuild Thermador control boards at www.fixyourboard.com

Top oven glass in door is broken (thermadore).

Hi,
Your oven model number is usually located on the rim of one of the oven doors or on the frame oaround a door. Some ranges with bottom drawers have the model number on the frame behind the drawer.

Here is a tip that I wrote about replaceing your glass....

We've had the same problem. I contacted a local sales room and they contacted their rep who promptly mailed the replacement parts I requested (I'd looked up the part numbers already). Now I'm waiting to find someone who will reasonably do the work.
