Unless the motor has been replaced at some point, a bad one is my guess. You can order a new motor from an Aerus Electrolux store and they will generally replace it just for the cost of the motor. One year warranty against defects, workmanship, and on the labor.
With potential other problems on a vacuum this age, you may be ahead buying a new one. Or even a newer used one. Aerus Electrolux still has new models available for less than $1200, and with a 5 year warranty. Still a terrific machine.

Why does my 1521 overheats and turn off

Its probably full of dust and lint, and most likely has something wrapped around the motor shaft. Take it apart and inspect in and around the moving parts of the motor, impeller, shaft etc Best way if you are not too handy and poor memory. Either make a video of disassemble or detailed diagrams as you take it apart. It will make your life a lot easier when you re-assemble it!

The burn smell means you should take it to a qualified Electrolux repair facility. It may be an electrical issue and could catch on fire if not repaired properly.

A quick twist counter-clockwise while pulling should do it. If not, contact an Aerus Electrolux store near you.

Panasonic MC-CL673 vacuum is not getting up to speed and smells

Even though the brush is spinning, you probably need to replace the belt2_bing.gif because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar. This is causing the smell (burning rubber). I don't believe it is your motor. :-)

I am looking to buy a used electrolux vacuum cleaner. I have the choice between the ultralux, the marquise, the diamond jubilee, and the olympia. Which one is the best model? Which has the best...

The Ultralux is the newest of your list. The Olympia has the old type powernozzel that is rectangular. The rest have the new L shaped powernozzel and the brush is longer. As to the performance, the three newer vacuums should be the same. If the vacuums are used and not rebuilt, I would select the Ultralux. The Marquise had a motor issue when they came out and if the motor has not been changed I would stear clear of it. I changed 37 motors in one month under warranty. They did rectify the problem with the later models of the Ultralux.

Vacuum shuts off and has a burnt smell

Hi,
Try removing the drivebelt, and try running it to test like this. The brush bar will not turn, but it should function normally without smell at this point. If it doesn't, you may need a new motor as I think the brushes may have worn down - producing an electrical type burning smell.

If it runs fine without the belt attatched, then there is probably a build-up of hair or threads at each end of the roller stopping it turning freely. With the hoover off, check it turns freely and easily. A small metal nail file or similar is usually a good tool to clear it.

If the roller is stiff, the belt will not turn easily, and overheat on the motor spindle - causing the burning smell.
