Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional for PC

Windows XP Professional

Recently reformatted my laptop (Compac NC6000) and successfully reinstalled Windows XP Professional. Decided to update to SP3 and downloaded the first batch of critical updates sucessfully, but for some reason the next lot of updates would download but not install. I just keep getting a message "Could not install updates" with a list of the updates that were downloaded but could not be installed!

Thanks in advance,

Gomog

Please send me the error message in case you have any, please do let me know which updates you were unable to install( security updates or critical updates).
Click on the link below and run the file. REGISTER FILES
Run this file and open the internet explorer and try to perform the windows update again.
you will be successfully able to install the updates.

Did you try uninstalling the last batch of updates?
To see the updates under "Add or Remove Programs", you'll need to check the appropriate box at the top.
If uninstalling does not help, you may have to start over.

Possible approaches to avoid the same issue when starting over:

  • Don't use SP3, unless you know that you *need* it. Check Wikipedia to decide whether you need it.
  • Install OS with SP2 and all updates, only then apply SP3.
  • Don't install all updates at once. Install them in batches of, say, 10 a batch. If the same thing happens, you know which batch was responsible.

Windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt

Step 1:
SP3 is the third and final service pack released for Microsoft Windows XP, and it eliminates many of the security holes that previously affected XP. While Microsoft recommends that users download SP3 using Windows Update, some users are unable to do so. However, it's easy to create a Windows XP SP3 installation CD; it requires only that you download the pack from the website and burn it to a CD-R/DVD-R using an ISO burner program.
Download the SP3 installation ISO by visiting the first link listed in the "Resources" section of this article. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the installation executable for ImgBurn and click "Next." Follow the remaining onscreen prompts and click "Finish" to complete installation of ImgBurn. Insert a blank CD-R/DVD-R into your DVD drive. Open ImgBurn by going to "Start," "Programs" and "ImgBurn." Click "File," then "Browse for a source file." Navigate to your Desktop and select the SP3 ISO file. Click "Open." Click the blue "ISO to CD" button located on the bottom left of ImgBurn. The program will begin creating the Windows XP SP3 installation CD. This process may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on the speed at which the CD-R/DVD-R is being burned. Click "OK" once the CD-R/DVD-R has finished burning. You've successfully created a Windows XP SP3 installation CD.

Tip

Automatically Slipstream Windows XP SP3 plus Hotfixes usign scripts

Ross Smith has one of best methods available to create your self a slipstreamed Windows XP with SP3 installed and all the critical hotfixes, the only problem is that he stopped developing it in April 2009 so the list is about 40 hotfixes short, network installation SP3 version HERE

smithi's great script http://smithii.com/slipstream_xpsp3 please will you update it Ross ?

I also like using RVM Integrator v1.6.7 OR Autostreamer v1.0.30 to slipstream SP3 first to a folder containing the Windows XP SP2 I386 files this will give you a installation folder with all the SP3 files integrated.

Paul Thurrott's WinSupersite gives you a manual method if you prefer tutorial with screendumps HERE also how to exrtract the microsoft image file so that you can create your own bootable CD

Then download the Hotfixes EF2 list for use with using IDM from my public skydrive HERE is my exported list OR if you prefer use Windows Update Downloader and download one of the update lists, you must double click the ULZ file to install it into the interface, update lists HERE

N.B>these 2 won't slipstream, but they can be run after windows is installed:

There are other alternatives like hfslip (similiar to smithi's script) and nLite + WinUpdateDownloader I have had limited success with both of them however there are alot of Program Addons available for nLite like WMP11 and IE8 and a whole list from MSFN available HERE

I need to reinstall SP2 over genuine XP reinstallation. This pack is now unavailable from Microsoft.

Windows XP SP3 comes separately with its own registration key. No previous versions are needed for a fresh install. Update packs are also available in many websites.

How to install windowsxp kb936929 sp3 x86 debug enu on my laptop got this file from somewhere, confused of installing this ,do i have to make a iso image of this and then create cd and then install

I'd just go to windows update already on your laptop.

Start - All programmes - windows update (top left hand corner). If you choose the "custom" option for downloads, you should be able to see/check all the downloads and updates. These should also include SP3.

Dowload a full version of Service pack 3 from the link below. It is an an official copy from Microsoft.
After download, manually install it. Installation should take 10 to 15 minutes, if installation doesnt complete, you will have to reinstall your Windows XP for it to successfully install.

HDD Reformatting

why not reinstall sp3 again for windows xp if it freezes then it might be looking for files that don't exist anymore. If the virus attatched itself to your files they may have been removed when you ran your virus software. you don't need to format to reload windows. Just simply do a clean reinstall on C drive.
