It goes on whatever route the software sees as the fastest route, that may or may not be highways. You are kinda stuck with this, there is no way around this on this model, which is an "entry" level GPS.

To avoid highways go to Tools > Settings > Navigation > Avoidance's > "here make sure that Major Roads is checked" . this will avoid highways for you.

Hope this helps!

The gps unit tell me to tunr off on every exit i pass

Perhaps you have it set to avoid highways and tolls? Or perhaps you're in pedestrian mode - so it's smart enought to tell you to get off the highway. So check your Navigation mode under settings.

My garmin takes me on different routes to other sat navs(friends)

You and your friend probably have different navigation preferences set. From the start-up screen, press the "tools" icon, then "Navigation" and review what's there. For example
- it will choose different routes depending on what kind of vehicle (including pedestrian); trucks can't go on parkways
- see if you've chosen "shortest" or "fastest" route
- check "avoidances" such as avoiding toll roads or avoiding highways

It sometimes tells me to turn the wrong way. It sometimes takes me on side streets and highways instead of main highways.

On the Nuvi units go to Tools....Settings...Navigation select Faster Time for Route Preference, and Avoidance Enable press enable make sure highways is not checked as places to avoid then click Back

Bad directions

It sounds as though your avoidances is set for "Highways." From the main menu, press, "Tools" then "Settings" and then "Navigation." Press "Avoidances" and see if there is a check mark next to "Highways." If there is, press it. The check mark should disappear. Let me know if this helps.

Off-Ramp errors

According to the Garmin site:

Question: Why does my nuvi route me off highways and through small side

If your nuvi routes you off of the highway and puts you on small side
streets, usually there is a simple navigational settings change that should
resolve the issue for you.

From the 'Where to?'/'View Map' screen:

Touch the 'Wrench' icon.
Touch 'Navigation' icon.¹

On this menu there will be a 'Route Preference' and 'Avoidances' menu

If you have the 'Route Preference' set to 'Shorter Distance', this may
sometimes route you off of a highway to put you on a more direct route. Try
setting the 'Route Preference' to 'Faster Time' and see if that makes a
difference in how the unit routes you.

Another setting that can be adjusted is the 'Avoidances' option, touch on
'Enabled' next to 'Avoidances'
A list of avoidances will appear, on that list if 'Highways' is checked
then the unit thinks that you do not want to travel on highways and
therefore routes you off of them. Simply uncheck the box next to 'Highways'
and that should resolve the issue.

I had "highways" listed, so I'm hoping this fixes my problem tomorrow.
