Question about Gateway PC Desktops

1 Answer

When booting my laptop I get the following message: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2:WDC WD1600BEUS-22RSTO-(S1) and a WARNING: Immediately backup your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be immenent. The PC is about 1 year old purchased from Best Buy. Who do I contact about getting this replaced under warranty, Best Buy, Gateway, or Western Digital?

I contacted Gateway and since the computer is 1 week past the end of the 1 year warranty they said "Sorry". I contacted Western Digital and they said since the hard drive was a component in a new computer and not purchased directly from them or an authorized reseller, there was no warranty, the computer mfg. was responsible for any warranty. I guess I will be looking to buy a new hard drive.

It means exactly what the message says.
The hard drive is going to fail in the near future. I recommend you back up your data before the hard drive fails completely.
When the hard drive fails, replace the hard drive, and use your Compaq recovery disk to install Windows and the device drivers plus your programs to get the laptop working again.

SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.
If you need further assistance, feel free to ask. If this answers or solves your issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe

Smart test failed on the drive

A smart failure warning is an internal hard disk drive self-diagnostic that will help predict a failure of the hard disk drive. Any system that is displaying a SMART error should immediately have any important data backed up as the drive is not reliable and is impending failure if it hasn't failed already.
Resolution is hard disk drive replacement, Generally around $100 depending on size and speed of replacement HDD

Computer will not boot up. Got message on DOS screen that says: "Primary Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad. WARNING: Immediate back-up your data and replace your hard drive."

Sounds like you have a hard drive failure. Get your recovery disk out if you have one, install a new drive and reinstall. If you had not backed up your data you may be too late. There are services but they are expensive.

Its saying failure predicted on hard disk 2:wdc wd2500bevs-22usto i cant get on the internet or use the computer cant do anything

Seems like your hard drive is about to die.

To double check, install http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=702&sid=30&lang=en

Burn the iso to a cd. Make sure you burn it as an image file.

Then when you turn on the computer, enter bios and make sure boot from cd is selected first. Restart with the cd you made inserted.

Let the tests run. If it fails a test, then contact westerndigital for a replacement. Tell them it failed the diagnostic tests.

Smart is a BIOS based harddrive testing utility, it is warning you that the harddrive is about to fail.
You should back up all your personal files as soon as possible and buy a new harddrive.

When you turn the computer on it says SMART Failer predicted on hard disk 0: HTS54108G9SA00-(S1)

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a diagnostic method originally developed by IBM that at that time referred to as "Predictive Failure Analysis". This technology was developed for IBM mainframe drives to give advanced warning of drive failures. Based on this diagnostic, Compaq announced IntelliSafeTM, which was submitted to the ATA/IDE standards committees and the resulting standard was named S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. analyzes many of the mechanical attributes; over time, some failures can be predicted by detecting if the hard disk drive is moving out of tolerance. While the S.M.A.R.T. technology can detect upcoming issues, not all hard drive failures are predictable.

All this means on most modern drives is the hard drive is coming close to the maximum tolerances

I usually switch off in the bios smart monitoring.

This system is trying to predict a possible failure, which may or may not occur..
