Question about LaCie Big Disk (300990U) (LAC300990U) 600 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I bought a LaCie 600GB Big Disk USB 2.0 ( 300990U ) at a garage sale and my Dual 2 Ghz Power PC G5 doesn't seem to recognize it. I am running on OS 10.4.11. The power supply seems to work and I have tried 2 different USB cables. Are there drivers that I need to install? It did not have any software with it and was previously used on a Windows PC. Does it need to be reformatted?

Chances are it is formatted in a way that OS X cannot detect. See if you can format it using the Disk Utility and then see if that allows it to mount the drive then...

My LaCie 500GB Quadra spins and clicks. Have tried (Mac) DiskWarrior and Disk Utility, but the drive ignores them and spins, clicks, and the blue light flashes

If you can hear clicking then I am afraid there is a serious problem with the hard drive.

The noise you can hear is usually known as "the click of death" when referring to hard drives.

Make sure you use ONLY the cable that came with it or a SHORTER one.

Dont connect via a USB hub

Make sure you only user the power supply that CAME WITH IT.

Most common causes are that the drive unit was dropped or mishandled or just plain old age

There is no known cure unless the data is mission critical

In which case you could sent it to a data recovery specialist but this is usually VERY expensive.

If you are advised to place it in a freezer or anything similar then that is up to you
but my advise would be to run from the person who may give this advise.

This is very old fashioned advice and meant for very old types of drives that used to get very hot.

If it a drive that was / is from an external enclosure then you could still use the enclosure and just place a new hard drive in there.

Another way to test it it to remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a PC with a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE.

My lacie mounts on the g5 but when i click it, it doesn't open.

It would be a good idea to look at the Mac system log so from a v bad memory do...click Apple (top laft hand corner) then about this Mac then System Profiler then Logs and take a look and see what errors you are getting. If this doesnt give you any clues my advice with external disk problems is where possible to remove the disk from the enclosure and install it in the Mac. if you can, THis will eliminate the USB cable, interface, and box. See if it mounts then. If it does run disk utility to double check it but get your data off first onto the Mac. Hope this helps....Mark

Will not start up. Sounds like airplane on take off.

When the computer hangs and does not get to the OS, the Fans are going to run at full power. sound like the OS is messed up. do this:
Boot to your install disk and the run disk first aid. If everything is OK, you may have to reinstall the OS. for the NO SOUND. you may have had the volume turned off. reset pram and see if that helps.

Lacie 250GB Hard Disk is not being recognized by PC (Windows XP)

Some PC's cannot deliver enough power to the USB devices to function properly through the USB port.
Does your Lacie hard disk have a power input connector if so conect a power adapter to it before you put it into your USB port.

Another alternative, get a powered USB hub connect it into your computer then connect the Lacie hard drive to the powered USB hub.

Lacie Silverscreen 80Gb Drive not recognised by My Dual Processor PC

Sorry for the late reply, but it may help someone else with the same problem.

Are you using a USB2 port, perhaps it's may not be getting enough power. In the orginal Lacie box was a double USB dongle - it allows you to take the power from two USB ports and send them to the Silverscreen, if the SScreen was getting quite enough power.

Or buy a double USB power cable (like: http://www.n-c.fr/webshopncrevendeurs/catalog/images/Double_Cable_USB.jpg)

Otherwise remove the 2.5" disk (remove two screws, & gently pull out) and use a caddy to check the HD disk is still working.

Lacie big disk 2.0 usb

For anyone with a Big Disk drive that doesn't get recognised by Windows and gets a TUSB 6250 message in Device Manager, the cause is very likely to be the power supply. Although the drive will be powered up, it is not spinning at the correct speed. I tried all of LaCie's technical support suggestions, some of which are outlined above and none worked. They finally suggested getting a new power supply. This solved the problem (Wattac, £22). This problem has affected a lot of LaCie Big Disk owners...

IPhoto doesn't recognize Sony MVC CD300

Even though Sony Mavica digital cameras are listed as compatible with iPhoto, the camera has to be set to Picture-Transfer-Protocol (PTP) before you can download. In addition, you will need to open Image Capture in the Applications folder. As soon as these steps are taken, the camera is recognized by iPhoto and all photos downloaded into Image Capture.
