Question about Jandy Laars Lx 400,000 Btu Heater

1 Answer

My LX400 Laars hearter has started to vibrate loudly when running. I suspect its the blower assembly. How does the top rempve from the heater so I can get to the blower and check it? I see no screws or bolting to remove it. Thanks.

Not the blower! It's the Thermal Bypass located where the inlet and outlet pipe enter the heater. There is a thermal sensitive spring assister valve in there. It needs to be replaced. Probably due to bad water chemistry!

Before doing anything, make sure your filters are not dirty! inadequate water flow will cause this problem.

Hearter temp control was blowing too hot, now only blows cold

Clicking sound you hear is the worn brushes in your blower motor. At this point the blower moter may or may not start with the switch. THe blower motor is faulty so I would change that first, then check for vacuum leaks or faulty selector cable for the heat blend door. It could have came off door side or heater control side.

Check that your heater isn't wired to the line side of the timer. It should be wired on the load side, NOT the line side. Problematic at best to have your heater powered all the time, at worst deadly to the heater should your various pressure/temp sensors fail and the heater fire up when the pump isn't on.

HEATER MAKING LOUD NOISES

Check the draft inducer motor for any partial blockages or dibri.

I've seen sticks, birds nest particles and pieces of deteriorating fan blades (squirrel cage type fans) cause this.

You might also find that the inducer motors bearing are going.

If its a loud vibrating grinding type noise, I'd suspect bearings or missing pieces of the blades. (unbalanced)
If it's a clanking type noise I'd suspect loose items hitting the fan.

The inducer motor will only operate right before and during burner operation, while the blower motor can operate at any time depending on your setting.
