Download the latest firmware from panasonics website, that will update the internal software engine that is in the recorder and maybe that will allow it to play and record avi, divx, etc. Its like updating the bios that all computers have, everything is a factor right down to who made the disc and format of the disc to disc size, etc. To update the firmware you must first download the file via the internet from another pc or if you are connected to the internet via ethernet cable to the recorder then you will be able to do that thru the on screen menu from the recorder,if you download the file from another pc ,you will need to put the file on either a memory card or disc and then go to update firmware thru the on screen menu and then let it know where the firmware is (browse to it)double left click the file and then press update firmware.Hope this solves your issue,if not let me know,be glad to help you get it right, thanks and good luck.

this is already on the player, checked following instuctions
    provided on panasonic site.
Someone says may need area patch to play all area dvd,s
    and divx.
Don't know what else to do m8.
So thanks for your help so far hope you can find a solution for me.
    Cheers Wally

Thanks ,i know this sounds weird but go ahead and update it anyway ,what happens is that it will
erase and rewrite it the bios with the new one you downloaded,if that doesnt do it you most likely have a bad optic lens assy. or a bad video processing board.Go to panasonics website and see if you can find any service bulletins on your model.Sorry i didnt get back with you right away.

Can my panasonic dmr-ez485v play .avi files burned from my laptop to a DVD-R?

I doubt it but try with a -RW disc and see. I recommend you get a video converter software like Wondershare and make your discs DVD-VIDEO (.VOB).

My LG DP122 will play some AVI files from a USB device but not others.

figured this out, lg dp122 uses DivX Home Theater profile, so the technical specs of the video must match that.
Those specs can be found here: http://www.divx.com/files/DivX-Profiles_Tech-Specs.pdf

How to transfer Panasonic DMR-E80H recorded DVDs to computer

I have to agree with XELIAM regarding finishing the disk, under the DVD "FUNCTIONS" selection from the remote. I also use the SLYSOFT products to transfer my videos to what ever other mode of video I wish to have, whether iPOD (MP4), or DIVX (AVI) or loads of other options. Slysoft makes a GREAT product

I just bought and set up the vhs to dvd program but when i coppied the video onto the disc and tried to play ti in the dvd player it said disc error.i made sure i followed the hook up directions.help!

You have either used a disc that is not compatible with your dvd player, or used the wrong file system for the dvd and/or format, have not finalized the dvd recording.
If you use a dvd-r for recording, the disc has to be finalized, regions use different formats of video(UK=PAL, USA=NTSC)
The easiest way to use your disc would be to convert the video to avi format(xvid divx mp4/3) and burn to a disc as data format.
Download ANY VIDEO CONVERTER FREE,
and ASHAMPOO BURNING STUDIO6 FREE .
Use the converter to change the video to avi, use the studio to burn the video as a data disc, you can get up to 14hours per standard dvd(28 hrs on a dual layer). Put the disc in and it will play as a DivX dvd.

Can't play divx or avi

Thats because Divx or AVI is not a recognized format for a DVD Player. If you are burning a disc you need a software that can create a DVD Format Disc from an AVI as all DivX are AVIs. I reccomend Ulead DVD Workshop 2:

Unknown Disc

There are at least two types of AVI formats that I know about: DIVX and XVID. When you encode your movie files are you encoding them always to DIVX? Some machines can play one format and not the other.

Did you make sure to handle the disc with care and not smudge it with your fingers? Dirty discs can easily be cleaned, using a super soft cloth & rubbing alcohol wiping in a swirling motion as you go around the disc. Discs with scratches need to be taken to a shop and professionally repaired.

Is the machine itself dirty? Simple fix: CD/DVD cleaner disc. Its got these little brushes on it to clean the laser eye.

Are you covering up any air holes on the outer case? Don't cover these up or the machine will get too hot, and will refuse to play anything.

Attempting to play bittorrent dvds.

If by bit-torrents you mean avi video files the DVD recorder must state it will play divX files. But if the files are encoded with a codec other than divX or X-vid then they may not play directly on any standalone DVD.
If the files you have downloaded are mpg2 files there is a chance they may play.
Lite-on do a nice small compact model that plays divX, or the Toshiba D-R17DTKB plays most things and has 1080p upscaling so you can connect it to an HDTV and upscale any slightly poor quality files you may of downloaded.

Does not playing DivX movies

Its not supposed to play Dix AVI movie files.
For a DVD player to play anything other than a DVD movie the manufacturer must pay royalties to who ever owns the patent, for example they would have to pay Philips say $1 for every DVD player made that plays VCD's, that may not sound a lot but, make 100,000 dvd players and they would have to pay Philips $100,000.
The technology has to be put into the device for it to work.
Hope that helps.
