Question about Memorex DVD+R Discs 47GB 16x Spindle Silver 50pack MEM05619 16x Spindle

2 Answers

I transfered a VHS tape to DVD on my Toshiba DVR620KU machine. I used a Memorex DVD+R. I can play the DVD on the Toshiba unit, but it will not plan on any other DVD. Can you tell me how to correct this problem? Thanks.

You must finalize the DVD on the Toshiba before it can be read on any other DVD player. Before finalization, it is possible to still add content to the DVD using the Toshiba but afterwards it will not be possible.

To quote from Features on page 8 of the DVR620KU manual under Compatibilities...
Although DVD+RW/+R are playable on other units without finalization in most cases, it is recommended to finalize in order to stabilize the performance.
Page 32 of the DVR620KU manual titled PLAYING THE DISCS IN OTHER DVD PLAYERS lists the needed steps for finalization and also briefly describes the finalization process as follows...
You will need to finalize discs to play back on other DVD players. Finalizing may take several minutes up to an hour. Since the process of the finalization fills empty space of the disc, a shorter recording period on the disc will require a longer time period for finalization. Do not
unplug the power cord during finalization.

Regarding finalization - The 2nd part of my previous note points to page 32 of the manual which describes the steps. On your hand-held remote control, do the following steps... 1. Press (SETUP), 2. Use up/down to select "DVD Menu" then press Enter - the "DVD Menu" menu will appear, 3. Use up/down to select "Finalization", then press Enter., 4. Use up/down to select "Yes" then press Enter. 5. Finalization is complete (you must wait for this message).

It is a possibility that the DVD players that you are using do not accept burned media. I would look into that first. The DVD player specification must say that they are DVD+R compatible.

WHEN I REWIND A TAPE IT GET TO THE END THEN BREAKS THE TAPE?

There is a small idler arm which senses the tension of a tape as it is played or rewound. It should stop the tape before it breaks but it sounds like you need a repair.

If the entire VHS is full then you can easily transfer the VHS contents to the DVD. The video will play while it is recording onto the DVD, but you don't have to have it hooked up to any TV for it to record. Now if you don't know how long the VHS content is that you want to record to DVD, then you will have to hook up the player to a TV so that you can press stop when you reach the end of the content you want recorded. At least this is true in the way that I use to transfer VHS to DVD:

1) Turn on the unit
2) Insert VHS tape
3) Insert DVD-+R or DVD-+ RW
4) Using remote, press VCR
5)Using remote, press play then pause the tape where you want to start recording.
6)Using remote, press DVD
7) Using the remote, press DUBBING. The VHS should start to play and the DVD should start recording

When using this method, don't hit the RECORD button!

I hope this helps!

I had a similar problem with a Cannon Optura PI and had to send it in. It was better, but I still have problems on occasion. If your intent is to transfer all the tapes to media, I would suggest purchasing Toshiba's DVD Video Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder. Model: DVR620KU. I use a VHS-C Cassette Adapter to play my VHS-C tapes in and the dubbed them to a DVD. Works great. Unfortunately, there is no 8mm/VHS Adapters, since 8mm, Hi8, miniDV are different formats with different technical characteristics than VHS. These formats were never developed with the intention to be mechanically compatible with past or current VHS technology. Your best bet would to borrow a HI-8 Camcorder and then dub your tapes to DVD's using the Toshiba machine. Here is a link to the Toshiba machine. http://www.testfreaks.com/dvd-players-recorders/toshiba-dvr620/
Good luck

VHS tape created in France

If it was made with the French standard you will need a machine capable of playing SECAM formats. Your cheapest way to go is to locate a video transfer business which deals in tape transfer. They should have the equipment which can play the tape and record it in a format which you can use. Cost should not be that much.

Toshiba d-vr600 record without viewing the whole tape

Unless both units has stated high speed transfer capabilities I think you have to do them one at a time and watch the entire video.
There are some units that are one unit for vhs to dvd. Panasonic is known to have some units but you are going to probably have to hunt for one. It will clearly state that it transferred compressed or highspeed.
