Are you sure you do not have a page stuck in it? Check the front and the back doors, and look upwards. I had a page stuck there, that I could hardly see.

Is it possible to convert this printer so it only uses black ink and it operates without the color cartridges?

Hi,

The Photosmart printers work in Thermal Inkjet printing technology. This require all cartridges to be present with ink for printer to work.

You may disable the color printing feature using the printer properties, even though the color cartridge will still be in use.

Only Laser jet printers can work with Black cartridge alone.

- Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
1. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”. (on C8100 use Touch Screen)
2. Press and release the “OK” button.
3. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
4. Press and release the “OK” button.
5. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
6. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
7. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
8. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
9. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
10. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK.
11. If the printer has already initialized, then go to the next step. If not, the printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
12. To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE. If SELF TEST prints, then printer is ready for use or Software Installation.
13. If the error is still there, or reoccurs replace the unit.

I assume that you are using HP cartridges and not refilled ones. If you are using refilled ones then whoever did it has not reset the chips correctly. Try real HP cartridges.

Failing that I would unplug the printer from the mains and the PC, and clear the printer cache on the PC (go to Control Panel or Start, and Printers, and open up the printer from its icon, and check that there is nothing showing waiting to print - and delete it/them if there is anything there). Then turn the PC off and restart it. Plug the printer into the mains again, and connect the printer to the Pc and try again.

If the problem persists delete the printer from Printers (again go to Printers and right-click on the printer icon and choose delete), and then reinstall it from the CD.

If that fails and the warranty is still active you can take it back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement printer.

Hp c7180 ink failure

Here is the exact sequence for the C7180. It worked great for me:
This is easily fixed with the following key sequences. You do NOT have to open the printer and unplug a circuit board.

1) press * and # at the same time
2) press 1, 2, 3 and “support R0632M” should display
3) press > and “information menu” should display
4) press > and “configuration menu” should display
5) press OK and “hardware failure status” should display
6) press OK “failure status: clear”. Press OK to clear
7) press CANCEL
8) press CANCEL
9) press CANCEL
10) turn printer off, unplug power cord for 2 minutes, plug cord back in then turn printer back on.
NOTE: I did this and the fist time the error came back. Do the sequence again (as I did) and the error will be replaced with the usual print cartridge initialization screens. Print a test page to make sure.
