Question about Singer 2250 Tradition

1 Answer

I have an old Singer, Model #6146 from the late 70's or early 80's, can't remember when my mom bought it, but I can't remember how to thread it and I don't know how to put the thread on the bobbin. Any suggestions?

Cotton reel on top, take the thread from the reel to the left and over the top guide, straight down throught the tension discs, back up to the take up lever making sure the lever is at the top, through the lever right to left, straight down through any guides and thread needle front to back.
To wind the bobbin, reel of cotton on top, bobbin on bobbin winder making sure it is pushed to the left, take the thread to the left and round the small wheel and back to the winder, wind the thread round a few times on the bobbin, push the windewr to the right, and loosen the stop motion in the balance wheel.

Does any one know anything about a sewing machine model 217-APP no 457. Think it may be a singer, have just found it in late mother-in-laws shed. It won't pick up the bobbin thread but runs ok

not picking up the bobbin thread is an indication of needle / hook timing
thread tension problems appear as a mess of stitches under the cloth
the timing can be checked by having the needle full down and the hook of the bobbin case should be at the needle just above the eye of the needle
if it is too early or late then it is not in position to get the thread

Bobbin problem

Hi. What a great daughter you are! Almost always, this problem is because the needle isn't in right (an easy mistake to make). The needle shank has a flat side, which needs to be facing a certain way. With almost all new machines (I hate to say all new machines), the flat side of the needle has to face the rear of the machine. The needle would then be threaded from front to back. (There was a lot more variation in older machines, but nearly all of them now have the flat side of the needle shank facing away from the seamstress.) A couple of other things can also prevent the bobbin thread from being pulled up, like if the needle is bent or dull or if the machine isn't threaded correctly, but in my experience, it's most likely the needle.
Please let me know if this solves the problem, ok?
Happy Sewing!

My singer starlet 353 is giving problems. The thread keeps breaking and I have no instruction book. Please advise which settings I should have each control on to do both overstitch and regular stitch for...

Remember that early Singer machines would only sew properly with number 40 or 50 mercerised thread, anything else and all sorts of things happen, top tension should be about 4 or 5

If you bought this machine at WalMart, I recommend you return and the go to JoAnn Fabrics. Walmart can buy millions of these machines and pay next to nothing for them. I don't even suggest a beginner buy this machine.

Machines should be bought from local dealer who actually has a clue how to show someone to us it. Sorry for your problems but commonly they are operator error
