The lens over the laser may just have a layer of dust on it. As it it already broken it can not hurt to carefully disassemble it and gently dust off the lens with a Q-tip. You have to be very gentle as the assemble that focuses the lens is extremely delicate. As far as replacing goes, Laptops generally have proprietary drives and you simply purchase a replacement from the manufacturer. In desktops you have a much broader selection. You just have to make sure you buy one with the required interface. IDE,SATA,ect...
