Cleaning the fins is always good. Is the fan by the compressor running? It needs to help cool the compressor. The description you mention sounds like the compressor is overheated and tripping the thermal overload on the compressor. See if you can turn if off for a day to let it all return to room temp then see if the compressor kicks on. If it was overheated it should run again for a while before overheating again. Let us know how that works and we can go from there.

It is the compressor that has failed. The hum is it trying to start and the following click is the overload protector opening. What is the temperature where the refrigerator is located? Allow the compressor to cool down before trying to restart it. If it still does not restart after it has cooled off it is done.

You have a sealed system problem. There is either a small leak or a restriction somewhere in the tubing. This isn't something you could've caused so don't worry about that. Unfortunately this isn't something you can fix yourself either. You require a certified refrigeration technician to fix this problem.

any properly operating compressor will be hot to the touch, that is the way they evaporate water taken from defrosting. On fridge compressors there are two windings, 'run' and 'start'. the start winding will give it the initial boost and the run winding will keep it running for as long as it needs to. If the start winding gives out the fridge will do what you're describing because it's only using the run. you will need an appliance repair tech to fix it. On the other hand, refrigerators also need clean coils and air flow to operate correctly. Try removing any bags, boxes of cereal, brooms, etc. out from on top and around the fridge. Second check your coils, they are either on the back or underneath (behind the snap-in kick plate) and either vacuum them if you can, or use a product alled 'blast-a-coil' or other similar coil cleaning agent to clean them. That should work for you, if not, post again, we'll work on it!
