Upgrading to an HD receiver would very much clear up the picture on flat panel

you are watching a standard definition signal expanded to fit the screen - it is like trying to paint the whole house with one rooms worth of paint

How can I switch my screen resolution on the Pioneer PDP-4270 from 480i to 720i or 1080i? HDMI cable is connected appropriately. I have tried new HDMI cables, and pressing reset to factory settings along...

Change the resolution on the cable box or satellite box, witch ever you have. A set by itself cannot change the resolution, if the cable is giving you 720p, that's what you'll see for that station. All stations do not transmit in HD. The best picture is only as good as they're giving you.

New flat screen hdtv has a fuzzy picture

Yes you will get a better picture quality out of a cable box if you get an HD cable box.
The reason you are getting the diminished picture is due to the signal you are feeding the TV is an analog signal. The newer HD TV's are made for digital TV and this older technology shows all its flaws on this type of TV.

When you get the new box understand that the same channels you are getting plugged directly into the tv are still going to have some grainy look to them but the good thing is that a lot of them are starting to be rebroadcast on HD channels and that is where your new toy will truly shine.

Enjoy your new TV...

Good Luck...

If I tap the rca jacks in the back the screen gets distorted

You need a hdmi connector from your tv source to the TV. RCA connectors don't have the capability for HD signal transmission. You can use them for a connection but the picture will be fuzzy if trying to watch HD signal. Check your cable/dish box to see if there is a hdmi output. If so, buy a hdmi cable & that should solve your problems.

New vizio 26'' hdtv seems sharp from a distance, but pixalated and

it is important to understand the difference in digital cable and high def. high definision is on a fiber optic display alwing milions of pixels per square inch on your tv. the resolution effects your fuzzy picture you are recieving . the only real way to fix that fuzzy dull picture is to get a HD box from your cable provider and an HDMI cable to conect it to your HD TV. this is the only connection you will need for picture and top line sound. In the end the fee is usually $9.95 or less a month and it is well worth the difference in quality of TV viewing.

Remove number displayed in right hand corner in output 4

The problem was with the cable box and not the television. We unplugged box - (we'd reset it before) and the "2" was gone.
